Publication The magazine is published ten times a year, September through May, along with an annual summer issue. Characterized by its 10 inch square format, with each cover devoted to the work of a single artist, the magazine is widely known as a decisive voice in its field. History Artforum was founded in 1962 in San Francisco by John P. Irwin, Jr. The next publisher owner Charles Cowles art dealer Charles Cowles moved the magazine to Los Angeles in 1965 before finally settling it in New York City in 1967, where it maintains offices today. The move to New York also encompassed a shift in the style of work championed by the magazine, moving away from California style art to Late modernism , then the leading style of art in New York City. The departure of Philip Leider as editor in chief in 1971 and the tenure of John Coplans as the new editor in chief roughly coincided with a shift towards more fashionable trends and away from Late modernism ... of the magazine.     Thomas Lawson b. 1951, Glasgow, Scotland is an artist, writer, and Dean of the School of Art at California Institute for the Arts . He has exhibited paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as part of the Pictures Generation exhibit, Metro Pictures in New York, Anthony Reynolds in London and LAXART in Los Angeles. Surveys of his work have been organized by the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art at La Jolla, the CCA in Glasgow and the Battersea Arts Centre in London. He has created temporary public works in New York, New Haven, Glasgow, Newcastle and Madrid. His essays have appeared in such journals as Artforum , Art in America , Flash Art , frieze magazine frieze and October journal October , as well as numerous exhibition catalogues. An anthology of his writing, Mining for Gold , was published in 2005 by JRP Ringier. From 1979 until 1992 he, along with writer Susan Morgan , published and edited REALLIFE Magazine , an irregular publication by and about younger artists interested in the relationship between art and life. A veteran of World War II and a photographer , he emigrated to the United States in 1960 and had many exhibitions in Europe and North America . Citation needed date July 2008 He was on the editorial staff of Artforum from 1962 to 1971, and was Editor in Chief from 1972 to 1977. Artistic practice Coplans is known for his series of black and white self portraits which are a frank study of the naked, aging body. He photographed his body from the base of his foot to the wrinkles on his hand. As he never photographed his face, his images are not focused on a specific man or identity. Artforum Coplans had a long affiliation with Artforum . He was there at the founding of the magazine, in San Francisco in 1962 he followed it, or it him, for sixteen years, down to Los Angeles, then, in 1967, to New York. With the departure in 1971 of Philip Leider, he became editor in chief, presiding over the tumultuous years that saw the core editorial group break apart into a handful of factions. Coplans s reign at Artforum was considered a time of editorial catholicity, reflecting a moment of expanding media, practices, and modes of engagement within contemporary art. Curator As a curator at the Pasadena Art Museum in the mid 60s, Coplans was among the earliest champions of Pop art and a vociferously sympathetic critic of the work of Roy Lichtenstein and especially Andy Warhol. He organized a survey of Pop as early as 1963 and later was responsible for retrospectives of Lichtenstein and Warhol as well as the 1968 Serial imagery Serial Imagery exhibition.
