Since its humble beginnings in 1998, it has become one of the leading arts festivals in Australia dedicated to the work and ideas of communities not included in other major Australian arts festivals. The program includes the festivals Electrofringe , the National Young Writers Festival , Critical Animals , Sound Summit the Crack Theatre Festival and other projects. Naming This Is Not Art takes its name from a prominent piece of graffiti on what was Newcastle s tallest building, Latec House now completely refurbished and converted to apartments , which had been derelict for several decades. The name also refers to the content of the event, which is outside the ambit of traditional Australian arts festivals. History This Is Not Art evolved from the National Young Writers Festival and National Student Media Conference which were established in Newcastle in September 1998. Synopsis Boycie and Marlene take a trip to a local country mansion, where Boycie admires the portraits that adorn the walls. Later, in the pub, he recounts his admiration of this long established tradition of respect for the gentry. Meanwhile, thrown out by his wife, Elgin has moved into Bryan s caravan and Mrs Cakeworthy s relentless gossiping fuels speculation about their change in relationship. Later the caravan burns down, and Boycie is horrified to find that Marlene has offered Bryan and Elgin a place to stay until it is fit to inhabit again. Still at the Grange a month later, Boycie despairs of ever getting rid of them, but they have a surprise in store as a mark of their gratitude, they have commissioned a renowned local artist, Genevieve Klunge, to paint his portrait. Sadly for Boycie, Mrs Klunge is mainly renowned for her paintings of cows. Schuco is a Germany German toy maker founded in 1912 by Heinrich M ller and the businessman Heinrich Schreyer in Nuremberg, Germany s early toy capital. Its specialty was usually cars and trucks in both tin and diecast. The company went bankrupt in 1976 but was reorganized in 1993 and then totally independent again by 1996. History Originally named Spielzeugfirma Schreyer & Co, the company changed its name to the more succinct Schuco in 1921. When the company started in 1912, it made unique clockwork tin toys. In the 1920s it introduced its famous Pick Pick bird over 20 million were made up until the 1960s . In 1935 one of the first Schuco patent motor cars was produced, starting a legacy of producing toy motor vehicles that have always been the company s main offering. Production was halted during World War II and in the late 1940s production began again with tin toys, this time focused more on the American market. Irresistible Gimmicks In the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a shift to plastic and then diecast metal toys of various scales including remote control and wind up toys. Toy scales were always widely varied from HO 1 90 scale up to a foot long or larger. Schuco toy lines always had some special quality to attract collectors as well as children. For example, Edward Force discusses that Schuco s first real foray into diecast toys was in 1958 when the Piccolo series of 1 90 scale cars was introduced Force 1990, 216 . These solid metal and heavy cars were clever and cartoonish at the same time and are highly collectible today, whether originals or later reproductions.
