ArsDigita was a web development company cofounded by Philip Greenspun , Tracy Adams , Ben Adida, Eve Andersson , Olin Shivers, Aure Prochazka, and Jin Choi and was started in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the mid 1990s. The company produced a popular Open Source toolkit, the ArsDigita Community System ACS , for building database backed community websites, and flourished at the peak of the Internet bubble. ACS was also the roots of OpenACS , which added PostgreSQL as a database option and gave the system a fully open source stack. The founders of the ArsDigita Corporation also set up a nonprofit organization, the ArsDigita Foundation , which sponsored a yearly programming contest for high school students and, in 2000, a free physical ArsDigita University school teaching an intensive one year course in undergraduate computer science. 1. Sustainable community energy system

A sustainable community energy system is an integrated approach to supplying a local community with its energy requirements from renewable energy or high efficiency co generation energy sources. The approach can be seen as a development of the distributed generation concept. Such systems are based on a combination of district heating , district cooling , plus electricity generation islands that are interlinked via a private wire electricity system largely bypassing the normal power grid to cut transmission losses and charges, as well as increasing the robustness of the system . The surplus from one generating island can therefore be used to make up the deficit at another. United Kingdom In the United Kingdom the first sustainable community energy system was pioneered by Woking Borough Municipality Council , starting in 1991. The system uses traditional and a Phosphoric acid fuel cell phosphoric acid fuel cell http www.woking.gov.uk html queensaward W 19.pdf co generation plants, thermal store thermal storage , heat fired absorption cooling and photovoltaics over 9 of the UK s small capacity , to supply both residential and non residential customers, as well as the Council s own facilities. By end of 2005 there were over 60 generating islands in the Borough. Despite the investment in the plant, the system delivers cheaper energy than can be supplied from the traditional brown energy suppliers, helping to tackle fuel poverty . It is part of a plan to cut local carbon dioxide emissions by 60 by 2050 and by 80 by 2100. There are 10 CRS classes Class 1 requires the most credit points and gives the largest premium reduction Class 10 receives no premium reduction. The CRS recognizes 18 creditable activities, organized under four categories numbered 300 through 600 Public Information, Mapping and Regulations, Flood Damage Reduction, and Flood Preparedness. As of October 1, 2010, there are 1,148 communities receiving flood insurance premium discounts based on their implementation of local mitigation, outreach, and educational activities that go beyond minimum NFIP requirements. Although premium discounts are one of the benefits of participation in the CRS, it is more important that these communities are carrying out activities that save lives and reduce property damage. These 1,148 communities represent a significant portion of the nation s flood risk as evidenced by the fact that more than 67 of all flood insurance policies are written in CRS communities. Communities receiving premium discounts through the CRS cover a full range of sizes from small to large, and a broad mixture of flood risks, including coastal and riverine. 1. Houston Community College System Foundation

Orphan date February 2009 Unreferenced date May 2007 The Houston Community College System Foundation was founded in 1976 to provide scholarships to Houston Community College students and to support the college s efforts to attract and educate Houston area students including many non traditional students and those facing barriers to higher education. Like virtually all community college foundations, for most of its existence the HCCS Foundation functioned primarily as a clearinghouse for scholarships, accepting funds from donors and awarding them to eligible students. It was not expected to engage in large scale solicitation of funds. Much has changed since the HCCS Foundation s establishment. Higher education has become a requirement for earning a stable living, and businesses have begun clamoring for a more educated workforce. At the same time, tuition and fees at four year institutions have skyrocketed, and Houston s demographics have shifted, with the majority of the city s young people now coming from backgrounds historically unlikely to receive higher education . Like community college foundations around the country, the HCCS Foundation recognized the need to expand its role and develop more sophisticated fundraising strategies to support HCC and its students. A new executive director was hired, along with a development team who have begun reaching out to Houston foundations, corporations, and individuals to support student scholarships and selected HCC capital projects throughout the city. In 2007, the HCCS Foundation launched a http www.hccsfoundation.org.new website , Houston Community College students can now apply online for all scholarships offered through the HCCS Foundation. Also in 2007, the HCCS Foundation was reclassified by the Internal Revenue Service as a Section 509 a 1 and 170 b 1 A vi publicly supported charity under section 501 c 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. coord missing Texas Category Universities and colleges in Houston, Texas Houston stub ...   more details
