other uses Musica poetica was a term commonly applied to the art of composing music in sixteenth and seventeenth century German schools and universities. Its first known use was in the Rudimenta Musicae Planae Wittenberg 1533 of Nicolaus Listenius. Previously, music had been divided into musica theoretica and musica practica , which were categorised with the quadrivium and trivium education trivium , respectively. Since music of the time primarily meant vocal music, it was natural for theorists to make analogies between the composition of music and the composition of oratory or poetry. Hence, the term musica poetica . Analogies between music and the rhetorical arts were made on several levels. Gallus Dressler 1563 suggested to liken the structure of a musical composition with that of a speech, as outlined in Classical antiquity Classical sources, dividing it into such sections as exordium , medium rhetoric medium and finis literally, beginning , middle and end . Another kind of analogy was to liken the rules or grammar of composition with those of speech, as illustrated by Joachim Burmeister s use of tauto pia to label consecutive fifths and octaves which were generally regarded as illegal except in special circumstances . Most significantly, though, special melodic, harmonic, or technical devices in music began to be associated with the figures of Classical antiquity Classical oratory for example, a rising or falling sequence in music was usually called climax in the literature of musica poetica . However, it must be pointed out that such analogies were not always direct terms used in musica poetica do not always correspond equivalently to their rhetorical counterparts for example, in oratory, anaphora means a straightforward repetition of a word, but in music it can denote ... poetica . Image vossius.jpg thumb right A later contribution by Vossius . Ars Historica was a genre of Renaissance humanism humanist historiography in the later Renaissance . It produced a small library of treatises underscoring the stylistic aspects of writing history as a work of art, but also introducing the contributions of philology and textual criticism in its precepts and evaluations. Background At the summit of his ars oratoria Cicero had celebrated history as the magistra vitae . In his De Oratore he proposed history as the summit of ars rhetorica , the rhetorical culture in which eloquence is at the service of the truth of human experience. Within the context of the rhetorical culture of humanism, the ars historica was an attempt to introduce critical and scholarly criteria into historical literature. Its significance was great during the period of confessional struggle between Protestants and Catholics in the later sixteenth century. In addition to the examples of the classical historians Herodotus and Thucydides , Livy and Tacitus , the contemporary works of Niccol Machiavelli Machiavelli and Guicciardini enhanced the prestige of historical writing. Two further Greek writers were classical sources for the ars historica Lucian of Samosata and Dionysius of Halicarnassus . The sixteenth century The attempt to raise history to the status of a classical ars derived impetus from the mid century critical renewal brought about by the ArsPoetica of Aristotle . The ars dictaminis was the medieval description of the art of prose composition, and more specifically of the writing of letters dictamen . It is closely linked to the ars dictandi , covering the composition of documents other than letters. The standing assumption was that these writings would be composed in Latin , and according to well worked out models. This made the arts of composition a subfield of rhetoric . In business letters, it called for some form of address e.g., Worshipful master salutation I greet you well notification May it please you to know exposition the wool was shipped disposition and I want my money and valediction May God keep you well, at least until my bill is paid .
