  1. Belfry of Tournai

Image Tournai JPG02.jpg thumb 250px Belfry of Tournai The belfry lang fr beffroi of Tournai , Belgium , is a freestanding bell tower of medieval origin, 72 metres in height with a 256 step stairway and an additional step at the entrance . This landmark building is one of a set of belfries of Belgium and France registered on the World Heritage Site UNESCO World Heritage List . Construction of the belfry began around 1188 when Philip II of France King Philip Augustus of France granted Tournai its town charter, conferring among other privileges the right to mount a communal bell to ring out signals to the townsfolk. The tower in its original form was evocative of the feudal keep , with a square cross section and crenelated parapet . It served in part as a watchtower for spotting fires and enemies. The growing city saw fit to expand the belfry in 1294, raising it by an additional stage, and buttressing its corners with four polygonal towerlets. A soldier statue was placed atop each towerlet, and a dragon icon surmounted the entire structure. The dragon, symbol of power and vigilance, also adorns other old tower tops in Belgium, including those of the Cloth Hall, Ypres Cloth Hall of Ypres and the belfry of Ghent . A fire damaged the building in 1391. In the following years, the city obtained new bells to replace the ruined ones, and affixed gilded decorations to the newly restored top part of the tower merman mermen , banners, and a new dragon. 1. Simon of Tournai

Simon of Tournai c. 1130 1201 was a professor at the University of Paris in the late twelfth century. His date of birth is uncertain, but he was teaching before 1184, as he signed a document at the same time as Gerard de Pucelle , the Bishop of Coventry , who died that year. Simon taught philosophy for ten years, and was said to be brilliant. Then he moved on to teaching theology, with equal success. He used the writings of Aristotle , whose works were becoming known, and other philosophical works. This eventually brought suspicion upon him from the enemies of the new philosophy. 1. Hériman of Tournai

H riman Herman of Tournai 1095 1147 , the third abbot of St Martin of Tournai, was a chronicle r of his abbey and, in many anecdotal accounts connected with the abbey, a social historian of the world seen from its perspective. Forced from his abbacy in 1136 by a contingent within the monastic community that asserted he had been lax in his enforcement of the Benedictine rule , he had the leisure while at Rome to write his book, Restauratio sancti Martini Tornacensis , written in Latin about fifty years after a local plague of 1090. He was a pupil of Odo of Cambrai Odoardus, later Bishop of Cambrai , whose example as a teacher he delineates at the start of his work, and who was the driving force behind the refounding of a neglected and undistinguished church dedicated to St Martin of Tours near Tournai . H riman s Restauratio has been edited and translated for the first time into English by Lynn Harry Nelson, who provided extended explanatory notes. ref Lynn Harry Nelson, ed., tr. 1. Siege of Tournai (1340)

During the Hundred Years War , after the naval battle at Sluys on 20 June 1340 , in which Edward III of England dealt the French a heavy blow, he went on to besiege Tournai . This city in Flanders was loyal to Philip VI of France . Edward and his forces reached Tournai on 23 July. Apart from the inhabitants, there was also a French garrison inside. The siege dragged on and Philip was drawing closer with an army, while Edward was running out of money. At the same time, Tournai was running out of food. Edward s mother in law, Joan of Valois, Countess of Hainaut Jeanne of Valois , then visited him in his tent on 22 September and begged for peace. She had already made the same plea in front of Philip, who was her brother. A truce could then be made without anyone losing face and Tournai was relieved. ref cite book title The Perfect King The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation last Mortimer first Ian authorlink Ian Mortimer pages 177 180 year 2008 publisher Vintage ref Notes reflist coord missing DEFAULTSORT Tournai, Siege Of Category Sieges involving France Category Battles of the Hundred Years War Category Conflicts in 1340 ...   more details

A first neo classical stone building dating from the 1840s was later dismantled and replaced to serve as the railway station of the town of Leuze en Hainaut . The current station building was designed by Henri Beyaert and erected between 1874 1879. The monumental building originally included a glass and iron construction covering the platforms and rails, and a gare des marchandises located in a separate building conceived in the form of a late medieval Flemish cloth hall. The buildings were severely damaged during World War II. The structure covering the platforms and rails was demolished and replaced by simple awnings covering the platforms. Today the station serves the lines IC D Liers Herstal IC H Schaerbeek Mouscron IR k Tournai Charleroi coord 50.613 N 3.3966 E region BE type railwaystation display title Category Railway stations in Belgium Category Railway stations opened in 1842 Category Buildings and structures in Hainaut province Belgium railstation stub fr Gare de Tournai nl Station Doornik ...   more details
