This formation outcrop crops out in northern Hainaut province Hainaut , southern West and East Flanders and in Walloon Brabant . The formation consists of marine ocean marine clay from the Ypresian age geology age early Eocene , about 52 million years old . The Kortrijk Formation consists predominantly of clay, sometimes sand y or silt y. The formation generally becomes sandier to the east, in Brabant and the Campine area. In some places fossil s or bioturbation occur. In the westernmost part of Belgium it can be 125 meters thick, but it gradually wedges out to the east. The Kortrijk Formation is subdivided into at least four member stratigraphy members the Mont H ribu Member , Orchies Member Orchies or Saint Maur Member , the Moen Member Moen or Roubaix Member and the Aalbeke Member . The Kortrijk Formation forms the lowest part of the Ieper Group and is stratigraphically overlain by the younger Tielt Formation late Ypresian marine sand , part of th same group. The rectangular square was shaped after the demolition of the old Lakenhalle Clothes Hall built in 1411 which was severely damaged by friendly fire in 1944. The square is situated between the Doorniksestraat and the Havermarkt and occupies an area of 5,060 square metres. Today, the square is a pedestrian area with several bars and outdoor bars. Underneath the square, there is a large car parking lot which was built in 1993 . On top of the entrance to this parking lot, there is a large fountain, sculpted by the artist Olivier Strebelle. The church played a mayor role in the history of the County of Flanders . The church was situated within the domain of the Counts of Flanders which was, except the part along the River Lys , fully walled. The church was part of the first castle of Kortrijk. After the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302 , which took place nearby on the Groeninge Monument Groeningekouter , the Flemish people hung 500 Golden Spurs of killed French knights on the ceiling of the church. Mercenaries took them away, in 1382 after the Battle of Roosebeke . They were replaced by replicas which can still be seen in the church. In 1370 , Count Louis II of Flanders had the Count s chapel built to be a mausoleum for he himself and to honour the holy Catharina. The Chapel contains paintings of all the rulers of Flanders . During the 15th century, the church was renovated. The facade of the late Gothic, early Renaissance city hall is adorned with the statues of the Counts of Flanders . History Image Kortrijk Hotel de ville.jpg thumb 280px As early as the 14th century Kortrijk possessed a town hall, which was, however, completely gutted down by the French army after the Battle of Roosebeke victory at Westrozebeke in 1382 . In 1420 a larger town hall was built in High Gothic architecture Gothic style . The pointed arches in the hall on the ground flour and upstairs are the only remnants of that building. The present city hall was erected about 1520 in a style composed of Gothic architecture Gothic and Renaissance elements. It was considerably larger than its predecessor. The front was gilded and polychromed as the front of the Brussels town hall still is . br In 1526 , statues of the principal Counts of Flanders were put into niches, which so far had housed prophets statues. In 1616 the town hall was once more enlarged, with a part of the front in the extant style. From the end of the 17th and throughout the 18th centuries, the front underwent a series of alterations and mutilations.
