This article is about the 1303 battle. For the Battle of 1589 see Battle of Arques 1589 . The Battle of Arques was fought on April 4, 1303. in the French city of Arques, Pas de Calais Arques between the County of Flanders and the Kingdom of France . Franco Flemish War 1297 1305 After July 11, 1302 The Battle of the Golden Spurs was an embarrassing defeat for King Philip IV of France that liberated the whole of the County from French occupation. Eager for revenge, King Philip raised a new army under Gaucher de Ch tillon , Constable of France , and moved against Flanders. The Flemish under William of J lich were checking the French troops and both armies met on August 30, 1302, between Arras and Douai . Negotiations were opened and both armies withdrew a few days later without fighting. April 1303 In the spring of 1303 the French army moved against Saint Omer . William of J lich responded by an attack on the weakly defended city of Arques, killing the French garrison of 60 and burning down the city. De Ch tillon hurried to Arques, where the Flemish prepared for battle. As in the Battle of the Golden Spurs, William of J lich positioned his infantry, mainly from Ieper in a horseshoe shaped formation. For hours, the French tried to break the Flemish formation, but to no avail. Finally the Fench withdrew to Saint Omer, leaving many dead and wounded behind. The Flemish had lost 3000 men and did not pursue. Despite these important losses, the battle was a Flemish victory. A new French invasion of Flanders had been prevented. Domaine de Baron arques is a vineyard and winery located in Saint Polycarpe , in the Aude department of the Languedoc Rousillon region. It is part of the AOC Limoux . It was purchased by the Baron ness Phillipine de Rothschild and her two sons in December 1998, and has been extensively renovated, producing their first vintage in 2003. File Domaine de Baron arques.jpg thumb The Chateau History The Domaine de Baron arques was originally the property of the Abbey of St. Polycarpe . After the French Revolution , it changed hands several times under the name of Domaine de Lambert, eventually belonging to Mr. Michel Tisseyre . At this point it was both a farm and a small vineyard. He began to grow more vines until he passed it on to his son, Guyonet. Guyonet Tisseyre was responsible for building the chateau on the property, from 1890 to 1900, engraving both his initials and a Bacchus head on the fa ade of the new chateau. The Domaine de Baron arques was purchased by the Baronness Phillipine de Rothschild and her two sons in December 1998. The Rothschild team pulled up 31 hectares out of 36 of the vine s, did a through soil analysis , and replanted the vines according to the soils that best suited them. Enguerrand II was the son of Hugh II of Ponthieu Hugh II count of Ponthieu . He assumed the county upon the death of his father on November 20, 1052. The Ponthievin alliance with duke William I of England William of Normandy had earlier been secured by the marriage of Enguerrand s sister, to duke William s uncle, William of Talou . Enguerrand was married to duke William s sister, Adelaide of Normandy Adelaide , by whom he had 3 children. However, because of some consanguinity there, or another infraction not now known, Enguerrand was excommunicated at the papal council held at Reims in October 1049 . William of Talou had built a strong castle at Arques , and from it in 1053 he defied his nephew the youthful duke of Normandy as family , the comital house of Ponthieu supported the rebellion. Duke William put Arques under siege, and then remained mobile with another force in the countryside nearby. He was aware that Normandy was being threatened by the armies of Henry I of France King Henry of France &mdash who wanted to bring his young, former vassal to heel and that Normandy s erstwhile allies from Ponthieu would also be coming to break the siege of Arques. Young count Enguerrand led a Ponthievin army of relief into the Talou and arrived first but duke William successfully ambushed them on October 25, 1053 and Enguerrand was killed legend says, within sight and sound of the walls of Arques, from which his sister witnessed the demise of her brother . Upon learning of this serious reverse, the vacillating Henry withdrew his forces at once back across the Norman border. William of Talou was compelled to surrender Arques and was banished for life. Alternatively, the story goes that king Henry reinforced Arques, and duke William lured part of the French army, including Enguerrand and the Ponthievins, away by a feigned flight, then turned on them and won a battle Henry then withdrew, forcing the surrender of Arques not long after.
