File Ensoniq FiZmO.png thumb The Ensoniq Fizmo The Ensoniq Fizmo was Ensoniq s last attempt at creating the perfect synthesizer . Developed in 1998, the Fizmo uses a Digital Acoustic simulation Transwave with 4 MB of ROM, up to 4 voices per preset, each voice with 2 oscillators, independent lfos and FX 48 voices maximum, with 3 separate fx units 24 bit VLSI effects with 41 algorithms built in for further sound sculpting. The Fizmo featured 61 keys, and responded to velocity & after touch, as well as allowing the sounds to be split by velocity & keyboard. The name F I Z M O was mapped across 5 real time control knobs just above the keyboard keys, allowing real time modulation of the waves for more user controlled evolving sounds than a usual synthesizer could provide, as well as also having 17 dedicated Sound and Effect editing knobs for further sound design and editing. The F I Z M O knobs did the following F Effect modulation. I Wave modulation. Z Filter cutoff. M Oscillator detuning. O Varies from Preset to Preset. Sys4 mod Sound The Fizmo s sound can be described as post modernistic and ambient. When editing patches it has a tendency to give an 80s style atmospheric sound. Its major strength is generally agreed to be on its ability to generate complex evolving pads and its arpeggiator . With sufficient adjustment, the Fizmo can be used for bass lines and sound effects though users may find this less intuitive than with more application specific synthesizers. Capabilities The Fizmo had 128 preset patches with 64 performance patches, a vocoder with mono mic line input, 22 modulation sources 8 modulation destinations, programmable pitch bend range, an LFO with seven waveform choices synchable to the arpeggiator or an external MIDI clock, four pole dynamic digital low pass resonant filters with key tracking 33 settings, including fractional scaling , and three envelope generators that could be modulated by velocity, key scaling, and response to release velocity. The MonoWave is a monophonic synthesizers monophonic 2U 19 rack synthesizer by Modulus Electronics, UK. Image MonoWave no9.jpg frame right 9 of the 25 serial MonoWaves build by Modulus Electronics. Shown here with a clear lid History This synth was first shown 2001 by its inventor Paul Maddox on a Palm Products GmbH PPG user fan meeting. Because its attraction to some synthesizer players at the event, the project was started with 5 beta test units to test the software and hardware . By spring 2002 the serial production of a 25 piece limited run started. About a year later all units were sold. Late in 2005, after many attempts at designing new products, Paul decided to close Modulus Electronics and its website modulus music.com . In order that people could still enjoy the Monowave he worked with Elby Designs to create a kit version of the monowave, with the same features. The software was released at the same time under the GPL license, in the hope that others would continue to develop its features. Features It features two digital oscillators with 256 different waveshapes selectable individually. There is also a unique de res, a function to lower the digital waveshapes sample resolution, to give a sound very much like the famous German PPG wave synthesizers from the eighties. The signal of these oscillators and their suboctave signals are mixed together and then feed in the pure analog part of the synth a 24 db lowpass filter a la Moog synthesizer . and a Variable gain amplifier VCA . Both of them controlled by their own Attack Decay Sustain Release ADSR envelopes . Depending on the EEPROM software, it may either have an arpeggiator or a midi velocity to wavenumber function. The MonoWave has no patch memory. It can be played by ingoing MIDI signals from software, Music sequencer sequencers or MIDI Keyboard instrument keyboards . It is notable for being one of the first multi timbral synthesizers, equipped with MIDI and an on board six track digital sequencer, hence the name. It was designed as an inexpensive and easily portable scratch pad machine for trying out arrangements. You can latch the arpeggiator and play along with sequences in real time. Also available is a unison mode which renders the keyboard monophonic but allows for very rich sounding timbres. The Six Trak is prominently featured and can be heard on the 1998 minimalist space music CD release The Dream Garden , by musician composer Dane Rochelle. The Six Trak s more famous sibling is the Prophet 5, widely used in much of the 1970s progressive rock. MIDI beat clock also know as MIDI timing clock or simply MIDI clock is a clock signal that is broadcast via MIDI to ensure that several MIDI enabled devices such as a synthesizer or music sequencer stay in synchronization. It is not MIDI timecode . Unlike MIDI timecode, the MIDI beat clock is tempo dependent. Clock events are sent at a rate of 24 ppqn pulses per quarter note . Those pulses are used to maintain a synchronized tempo for synthesizers that have Beats per minute BPM dependent voices and also for arpeggiator synchronization. It does not transmit any location information bar number or time code and so must be used in conjunction with a positional reference such as timecode for complete sync. Because of limitations in MIDI and synthesizers, devices driven by MIDI beatclock are often subject to clock drift . For this reason, it is a common practice on equipment that supports another clock source such as ADAT or wordclock to use both that source and MIDI beatclock. MIDI beat clock defines the following real time messages clock decimal 248, hex 0xF8 start decimal 250, hex 0xFA continue decimal 251, hex 0xFB stop decimal 252, hex 0xFC See also word clock MIDI timecode DIN sync External links http www.motu.com techsupport technotes document.2000 01 03.5940408679 MOTU describes MIDI beat clock http www.midiclock.com Free software to send a midiclock beat signal http nic nac project.org rocket midi midiclockdetect Free software to measure a midiclock beat signal http www.cycling74.com docs max5 refpages msp ref sync .html MAX MSP documentation to their sync object http home.roadrunner.com jgglatt tech midispec.htm MIDI specification http www.midi.org techspecs midimessages.php Summary of MIDI messages Category Encodings Category MIDI standards Category MIDI Category Synchronization ... more details

File 5pin180dinplug.jpg thumb The SYNC standard, often called DIN sync or sync24 more rarely sync48 , defines an Electrical connector interface for electronic music instruments. It was introduced in the 1980s by Roland Corporation for synchronization of music sequencer s, drum machine s, arpeggiator s and similar devices. The SYNC standard uses the signals clock or tempo and start stop or run stop . The signals are transistor transistor logic TTL compatible. This means the low state is 0 V, the high state is about 5 V. The clock signal 2.51 V, 24ppqn for Roland gear defines the speed of the sequence or drum pattern. The start stop signal defines if the sequence is running start stop 0 V stop, start stop 5 V running . The SYNC standard uses 5 pin DIN connector s, the same as used for MIDI , but uses a different pin out. The term DIN sync does not mean that it is a Deutsches Institut f r Normung DIN standard, only that it uses DIN connectors. In some applications the remaining pins 4 and 5 are even used as tap , fill in or reset and start . But this differs from device to device. To connect two SYNC devices a cable with a 3 or 5 pin plug on each side has to be used. The pins 1, 2 and 3 have to be connected in contrast to MIDI that uses the pins 4, 5 and 2 . A standard MIDI cable is not suitable as pins 1 and 3 may be unconnected. SYNC Input Output Some SYNC devices have SYNC In and SYNC Out sockets Others have only one socket that can be switched between input and output e.g. Roland TR 808 . The third group uses switched sockets. This means that the socket is switched to input if a plug is inserted e.g. Roland TB 303 . If you want to use this socket as output a special plug without ring has to be used as the ring of the plug operates the switch. For details refer to the user s manual or service manual of the specific device. Roland DIN sync uses 24 pulses per crotchet quarter note , hence the term 24ppqn.
