Arnulf also Arnulph or Arnoul was archbishop of Reims and the illegitimacy illegitimate son of King Lothair of France . Archbishop Adalberon wanted Pope Sylvester II Gerbert of Aurillac to succeed him, but King Hugh Capet accepted the elected Arnulf, a Carolingian , in March 989. In September of that year, Arnulf supported an attempt to place his uncle Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine Charles , duke of Lower Lorraine , on the throne. Charles briefly held Rheims and Laon . In 990, Arnulf refused to attend a synod at Senlis, Oise Senlis and he and Charles were imprisoned March 29 . In June, 991, Seguin, Archbishop of Sens presided over a Synod of Reims in the Basilica of Saint Basle, which deposed Arnulf for alleged high treason in favour of Gerbert, later Pope Sylvester II . This deposition was much opposed, however. Pope John XV sent Leo, abbot of Saints Saint Boniface Boniface and Saint Alexius Alexius at Rome , as papal legate legate to preside over a synod at Mouzon , June 2, 995. Gerbert was suspended from the episcopum. A second synod, held July 1, declared the whole process of deposition and elevation to be illegal and invalid. Thus, Arnulf was reinstated. He crowned Hugh, the son of Robert II of France Robert II , co king in the House of Capet Capetian tradition in 1017. At this time, any resistance to the new dynasty had died in him. He makes Arnulf descended from a family of local captains. ref was the Archbishop of Milan from his election 6 December 1093 to his death in 1097. He succeeded Anselm III, Archbishop of Milan Anselm III only two days after his death. Along with Anselm III and Anselm IV, Archbishop of Milan Anselm IV , he was one of a trio of successive Ambrosian pontiffs to side with pope against emperor in the late eleventh and early twelfth century. Though his election had been vaild, he was invested by Conrad of Italy Conrad II , but the papal legate declared him a simoniac and deposed. Consequently, he was never consecrated. Arnulf went into a brief retirement of penance at the monastery of S. Pietro di Civate , where Anselm III had gone for a similar reason during his episcopate. After his brief sojourn there, he was reconciled with Pope Urban II and received the pallium . According to Pandulf of Pisa , this was the moment of his consecration. Bernold of Constance places his consecration in March 1095. It was performed by three great bishops of the Germany German Gregorian reform Thimo of Salzburg , Odalric of Passau , and Gebhard III of Constance . Arnulf himself became an enthusiastic reformer and opponent of the Emperor Henry IV . He participated in the Council of Piacenza . From 6 to 26 May that same year 1095 , the pope was present at Milan for the transferral of the relics of Erlembald to S. Dionigi. In 1096, the pope preached the First Crusade at S. Tecla in Milanese territory. Only two of Arnulf s acts as bishop survive and he is buried in Civate. Notes references Sources Landolfo Iuniore di San Paolo. Historia Mediolanensis . Manasses I , known as Manasses de Gournay, was the Archbishop of Reims , and thus primate of France, from 1069 ref He was elected before, but was not consecrated until after, 4 October. ref to his deposition on 27 December 1081. Manasses was indisputably of noble lineage, maybe even a son of the female line descended from Hugh Capet , King of France . He was a simple cleric before he succeeded Gervase, Archbishop of Reims Gervase de Bell me as archbishop. He was known to be enterprising and liberal and was reputed as one of the columns of the church by Lanfranc , Archbishop of Canterbury . Pope Gregory VII entrusted Manasses with several delicate missions, but the bishop s character was not held in esteem by his former colleagues, the lower clergy. Among them, he was reputed to be tyrannical, violent, corrupt, impatient, insolent, and disregarding of ecclesiastical regulations. His language gave cause to doubt his piety. According to Guibert of Nogent , the archbishop of Reims would be a beautiful benefit to the see , if he were not obligated to sing the masses Eventually this reputation became public. In 1072, he began disputing with the monks of Saint Remi over their rights of suffrage and tried to impose his own choice of abbot. Arnulf of Milan , or Arnulfus Mediolanensis flourished c. 1085 was a chronicler of events in Northern Italy in the work in five books by which he is known, Liber gestorum recentium , a book of the deeds of recent times . He describes his labour in the first book as a simple narrative, offered in everyday speech, of the deeds accomplished by our kings, our bishops, and our fellow citizens from Milan and beyond, as well as our compatriots in the Kingdom of Italy, which I myself have seen or somehow heard from either those who saw them or those slightly later. ref Quotations are from W. North s translation of the text edited by Claudia Zey. ref Unlike most Christian chroniclers of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages , Arnulf did not begin with the Creation Nevertheless, leaving aside antiquity, let us begin from recent memory and his account is all the more valuable for recording events that were fresh in the memory of the living, as seen from the archbishopric of Milan . Arnulf s history begins in 925, with Hugh of Arles Hugh of Arles Hugh of the Burgundians reigning as King of Italy and exercising his right to appoint an archbishop of Milan . It covers the years of the Gregorian reform s, the reform movement of the Milanese Patarenes , and the Investiture Controversy . It ends with the kingship granted to Rudolf von Rheinfeld as anti king of the Germans 1077 . Use dmy dates date September 2011 Arnulf of Leuven c. 1200 1250 was the abbot of the Cistercian abbey in Villers la Ville . After serving in this office for ten years, he abdicated, hoping to pursue a life devoted to study and asceticism. He died within a year. Little else is known. Work He compiled the first volume of the annals of the Villers Abbey 1146 1240 . However, his primary significance is as a poet. His Excerptum Speculi Caritatis is a verse adaptation of the Summa Causum of Raymond of Pe afort . Arnulf is also the probable author of the Membra Jesu Nostri , a cycle of five poems, each a meditation on one of the wounds of the crucified Christ. In the 17th century, Paul Gerhardt wrote an adaptation in German, which became O Sacred Head, Now Wounded in English. These poems were ascribed to Bernard of Clairvaux , for they are consistent with his spirituality. However, the external proof for this ascription is so slight as to be negligible Hurlbut, VII, 18 . The Membra Jesu Nostri did appear in Bernard s collected works, but only beginning two hundred years after his death. When the monasteries were suppressed in the French Revolution , all of the relevant manuscripts disappeared. The true authorship of the Membra Jesu Nostri will remain a mystery.
