Infobox Painting image file Hockney.clark percy.jpg title Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy artist David Hockney type Acrylic paint Acrylic on canvas year 1970 1971 height 304 width 213 height inch 120 width inch 84 city London museum Tate Gallery Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy is a painting by the British artist David Hockney . Painted between 1970 and 1971, it depicts the fashion designer Ossie Clark and the textile designer Celia Birtwell shortly after their wedding at which Hockney was Clark s best man. Hockney and Clark had been friends since the early 1960s. One of their cats sits on Ossie s knee the cat in the painting was not in fact Percy &mdash this was the name of one of their other cats &mdash but Hockney thought Percy made a better title than Blanche, the cat he painted . The work is in acrylic on canvas, and measures 2170 x 3084mm. The painting featured in the final 10 of the Greatest Painting in Britain Vote in 2005, the only work by a living artist to do so. The painting is in the collection of the Tate Gallery . Symbolism Hockney drew on both The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck and A Rake s Progress by William Hogarth in the symbolism and composition of the painting. A copy of Hockney s own interpretation of A Rake s Progress is seen on the wall. The positions of the two figures are reversed from the Arnolfini Portrait with the implication that Birtwell is the dominant partner. The lilies near Birtwell, a symbol of female purity are also associated with depictions of the Annunciation at the time of the portrait Birtwell was pregnant . The cat on Clark s lap is a symbol of infidelity and envy. In this case Clark, who was bisexual, continued to have affairs which contributed to the breakdown of the marriage in 1974. Infobox Painting image file Take your son.jpg backcolor FBF5DF painting alignment right image size 200px title Take your son, Sir artist Ford Madox Brown year 1851 6 type Oil painting Oil on canvas height 381 width 705 height inch width inch diameter cm diameter inch city London museum Tate Gallery Take Your Son, Sir 1851 6 is an unfinished painting by Ford Madox Brown which depicts a woman showing her newborn son to its father. She is offering her baby towards the viewer of the painting, who is implicitly equated with the father seen in the mirror behind, opening his arms to receive the baby. The mirror also forms a halo behind the mother s head, and the pattern on the wallpaper suggests the starry heavens. Brown s principal influence was Jan van Eyck s painting the Arnolfini Portrait Arnolfini Marriage Portrait , recently acquired by the National Gallery. The mirror resembles the circular mirror in van Eyck s painting, which reflects an image of the artist looking at the couple in the image. The woman is wearing crinoline s, which expand to cover the whole of the lower part of the painting. Brown has left this part incomplete, roughly squaring up and sketching the dress in outline. The title is written on the unfinished dress, underneath the child at the right. It is not known why Brown failed to complete the painting, but he seems to have worked on it intermittently throughout his life. Interpretations There are two principal interpretations of the picture. Most critics see it as an image of a wife offering the child to her husband, an interpretation supported by the sacred symbolism and by the fact that Brown depicted his own wife and their new son. Some commentators, however, interpret it as more confrontational image, in which an abandoned mistress presents her baby to its father. ref http www.tate.org.uk servlet ViewWork?workid 1608 Tate Gallery Collection, Take your Son, Sir 1851 92 ref The art historian Marcia Pointon has argued that the painting is deliber ... more details

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is a point of interest in the Forest of Dean in the county of Gloucestershire , England. The Sculpture Trail links several different site specific sculptures commissioned for the forest. It is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year, with no admission charge. The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust continues to raise funds to commission additional works. The Trust FODST manages the Sculpture Trail, located at Beechenhurst, near Coleford in Gloucestershire, in partnership with the Forestry Commission in the Forest of Dean. The Trust is a registered charity and has a long record of commissioning sculpture and related temporary projects that are specific to the forest environment. Commissioning commenced in 1986, originally in partnership with Arnolfini, Bristol s flagship contemporary art gallery, and following the establishment of the Trail has resulted in the presentation of more than 20 permanent sculptures, almost all of international significance, alongside temporary residencies and highly successful public events. The Trail provides access to a diverse audience that attracts an estimated 150,000 visitors per year. Since many of them do not visit art galleries, this is frequently their first introduction to site specific art, or indeed contemporary art of any form. Fact date November 2008 The early sculptures were commissioned to be site responsive and to interpret the forest, and the Trust adheres to this very particular strategy, which is what makes the Dean very different to other Sculpture Trails in the country. File Bilinska BohdanowiczowaAnn.PortretWlasny.1892.jpg thumb 240px Anna Bili ska Bohdanowicz , Self portrait , 1892, Unfinished portrait showing underdrawing. Underdrawing is the drawing done on a painting ground before paint is applied, for example, an imprimatura or an underpainting . Underdrawing was used extensively by 15th century painters like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden . These artists underdrew with a brush, using hatching strokes for shading, using water based black paint, before underpainting and overpainting with oils. Cennino D Andrea Cennini 14th century most likely describes a different type of underdrawing, made with graded tones rather than hatching, for egg tempera . In some cases, underdrawing can be clearly visualized using infrared reflectography because carbon black pigments absorb infrared light, whereas opaque pigments such as lead white are transparent with infrared light. What is remarkable about some historical examples of underdrawing, in, for example, the Annunciation van Eyck, Washington or the Arnolfini Portrait , is the extent to which artists made radical alterations to their carefully laid designs.
