A student of the French landscape painter Eug ne Ciceri and Edmond Yon , Thornley became a successful artist remembered for his seascapes from Normandy and his landscapes from the French Riviera French and Italian Riviera s. He was the son of a Wales Welsh immigrant Morgan Thornley. He also was a talented watercolor ist, engraver , and lithographer . His lithographs after the works of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot Corot , Pissarro , Degas and Puvis de Chavannes were acclaimed by his peers and awarded at the Salon de Paris . His paintings were exhibited beginning in 1878. He won the Mention of Honor in 1881 and a Third Class medal in 1888. Thornley embraced the Impressionist movement early in his career, which brought him much success. His style characteristically has bold brushwork and thick impasto . It recreates the impression of a panorama , capturing the fleeting moment in its inner light and color. The Everhart Thornley Detector E T detector or ET detector is a Secondary electrons secondary electron Sensor detector used in scanning electron microscope s SEMs . It is named after its designers, Thomas Everhart Thomas E. Everhart and Richard F. M. A. Rajchman by changing the electron multiplier to a photomultiplier. The Everhart Thornley Detector with its lightguide and highly efficient photomultiplier is the most frequently used detector in SEMs. The detector consists primarily of a scintillator inside a Faraday cage inside the specimen chamber of the microscope. A low positive voltage is applied to the Faraday cage to attract the relatively low energy less than 50 electron volt eVs by definition secondary electrons. Other electrons within the specimen chamber are not attracted by this low voltage and will only reach the detector if their direction of travel takes them to it. The scintillator has a high positive voltage in the nature of 10,000 eVs to accelerate the incoming electrons to it where they can be converted to light photons.
