The play was written between 1878 and 1879 in the town of Dublin, New Hampshire . ref name Qui497 Quinn, p. 497 ref MacKaye meant it to be expressly for New York City s Madison Square Theatre, which MacKaye had recently renovated and completely remodeled. Originally titled An Iron Will , the play toured Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington until renovations on the Madison Square Theatre were complete. It premiered there on February 4, 1880 and the original production became immensely successful it starred actress Effie Ellsler in the title role and ran for 486 consecutive performances ref Murphy, p. 5 ref before closing May 31, 1881. His first opera, Tartuffe Mechem Tartuffe , with nearly 400 performances in six countries, has become one of the most popular operas written by an American. He has composed more than 250 works in almost every form. In 2002, ASCAP registered performances of his music in 42 countries. He is often called the dean of American choral composers G. Schirmer bio . Biography Mechem was born August 16, 1925 in Wichita, Kansas . His family moved to Topeka when he was five. His father was a writer of published novels, plays and poetry and was director of the Kansas State Historical Society. His mother was a German trained concert pianist. Mechem began studying piano with his mother at an early age but was more interested in sports. He later worked for a time as a sports reporter for the Topeka Daily Capital. He played popular music by ear and at age seventeen began writing what he describes as stacks of wretched songs. During World War II, he served two and half years in the army, then enrolled at Stanford University as an English major, intending to follow in his father s footsteps as a writer. Biography Porter was born in Concord, New Hampshire . In 1860, he graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island . He also helped found the YMCA that year. He attended the Newton Theological Seminary in Newton Center, Massachusetts . In 1862, he enlisted in the 45th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia , and was muster ed out in July 1863. He continued his theological training at the Rochester Theological Seminary in Rochester, New York , but in 1866 he was given a gift of United States dollar 20,000 by his father, which changed the course of his life. Background St. Olaf Kirke is situated on a rise overlooking Meridian Creek valley, four miles east of Cranfills Gap . The church was constructed in 1884 on land purchased for 25. Designed and built in 1886 by Andrew Michelson, St. Olaf Kirke served a community of Norwegian American Norwegian settlers who farmed on area lands. With the help of Michelson s brothers, Christian and Ole, as well as many local farmers, limestone was quarried from the surrounding hills to build the church.
