The Worshipful Company of Armourer s and brass Brasiers is one of the Livery Company Livery Companies of the City of London . The Armourers Guild was established in 1322 it received a Royal Charter in 1453. Other Companies, including the Armour Repairers, merged with the Armourers. In 1708, brass workers joined the Company, which was renamed as the Armourers and Brasiers Company. The Company does support the metallurgy industry, but does not retain a close association with its original trade, as is the case with a majority of Livery Companies. It exists primarily as a charitable establishment. The Company is based at Armourers Hall , situated on the corner of Coleman Street and London Wall , and has occupied this same site since 1346. The Hall was one of the very few to escape destruction in the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1795, the Hall was enlarged, but it was decided in 1839 to rebuild it completely. The lantern, or dome, of the Livery Hall was added in 1872. On 29 December 1940, during a major blitz on London, the surrounding area was devastated, but again the Hall survived. Pradell learned the armourer s trade from his father and studied the craft of punchcutting . He established his own workshop in Barcelona. Although he was illiterate, he produced one of the most admired typefaces ever cut in Spain. The boss was originally designed to deflect blows from the centre of round shields, though they also provided a place to mount the shield s grip. As time went on and heater shield s with curved bodies became more popular, and enarmes superseded the bar grip, the boss became more of an ornamental piece. Often, bosses are not present on non circular shields due to the differences in technique with a round shield, one makes a Punch strike punch ing motion towards an oncoming blow, while with a heater shield heater or kite shield , attacks are blocked by pivoting the shield about the body. A boss provides a significant advantage for deflecting blows when using a punching motion, but is not very effective when using a pivot to block an attack. Similar busts were frequently reproduced in bronze, with minor changes, as the officially approved sculptural image of the King. Portrait busts were unusual in early 17th century England and were commissioned mainly by those in court circles. People Hubert Le Sueur was the son of a master armourer in Paris, where he became established as a court artist. He was appointed as one of the sculptors to Louis XIII in January 1614. In 1625 he was sent to England to work at the court of Charles I, shortly after the King s marriage to Louis sister, Henrietta Maria. The use of marble is unique for Le Sueur s portrait busts, as he specialised primarily in bronze. His impressive equestrian bronze portrait of Charles I now in Trafalgar Square is signed and dated 1633. Time The bust is dated 1631, the first year that Le Sueur was recorded in the King s employ, when he also spent four months in Rome taking casts of ancient sculpture. The sculpture is the earliest datable bust of the monarch by the artist and marks an increasing interest in sculptural portraits in England during the 1630s and 40s.
