It is often offered to United States American Secondary education high school students when they are in the 10th, 11th and 12th grade, though anyone eligible for enlistment may take it. There has never been a requirement that a test taker with a qualifying score enlist in the military, and the test may simply determine personal aptitude at a particular career. History The ASVAB was first introduced in 1968 and was adopted by all branches of the military in 1976. In 2002 it underwent a major revision. In 2004, the test s percentile ranking scoring system was re Normalization statistics normalized , to ensure that a score of 50 really did represent doing better than exactly 50 of test takers. It is used to determine who may pursue training as a military linguist. It consists of 126 multiple choice questions, and the test is scored out of a possible 176 points. The first half of the test is audio, and the second half is written. As of 2009, the test is completely web based. The test does not attempt to gauge a person s fluency in a given language, but rather to determine their ability to learn a language. To qualify to pursue training in a language, one needs a minimum score of 100. The United States Marine Corps Marines will waiver it to 90 for Cat I and Cat II languages, and the United States Navy Navy will waiver it to a 95 for Cat I languages only. The United States Air Force Air Force does not currently offer a waiver. The languages are broken into tiers, based on their difficulty level for a native English speaker, as determined by the Defense Language Institute . The DLAB is also used for the Australian Defence Force .     Women s Armed Services Integration Act , United States law enacted on June 12, 1948, enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces in the United States Army Army , United States Navy Navy , United States Marine Corps Marine Corps , and the recently formed United States Air Force Air Force . Prior to this act, women, with the exception of nurses, served in the military only in times of war. However, in October 1949 a new Army regulation decreed that mothers with dependent children were ineligible to serve in the military, and female servicewomen with children under the age of 18 were discharged.
