Charles delaCroix October 28, 1792 August 20, 1869 was a Flemish people Flemish Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic missionary. Early life He was born at Horebeke Sint Kornelis Horebeke and was educated at the seminary in Ghent . Because he resisted the bishop forced upon the diocese by Napoleon I , he was imprisoned in the fortress of Wesel with his brother Joseph, who did not survive. After the fall of Napoleon s empire, delaCroix resumed his studies and was ordained in Ghent by Bishop Dubourg of Louisiana, whom he later followed to the United States along with several other seminarians and some Flemish workmen. In May 1818, he was sent to Perry County, Missouri , to superintend the building of a seminary for the Louisiana diocese as well as begin his missionary duties. Missionary Life After the arrival of Father Rosati, president of the new seminary, delaCroix went to Florissant, Missouri on December 3, 1818. With the help of the newly arrived colony of the Society of the Sacred Heart , he worked to prepare the way for Pierre Jean De Smet and the other Jesuit missionaries, who came to Florissant in 1823. He labored among both the Catholic families and the Osage Nation of the plains. When Father Van Quickenborne, S.J., arrived with his eight companions, delaCroix had nearly completed a brick church, started a farm, and opened a missionary field for the work of young Jesuits . Having been appointed to St. Michael s parish in lower Louisiana , Father delaCroix prepared a convent for the Society of the Sacred Heart, in which they opened a boarding school in 1828. He spent the two following years helping Father Pierre Daniel Richer at Lorette, Manitoba Lorette , and studying the Huron language . In 1728 he went to Detroit to re establish the long interrupted mission to the dispersed Huron Petun s in the West. Not a solitary professing Christian did he find, but among the aged not a few had been baptism baptized . The new Indian church, though seventy cubit s long 105 ft? was scarcely spacious enough to contain the fervent congregation of practising Hurons. During the night, 24 25 March 1746, the father was stricken with paralysis , and on 29 July he was placed in an open canoe and thus conveyed to Quebec . In 1747 the Hurons insisted on his returning to restore tranquillity to their nation. The father had almost completely recovered from his palsy , and willingly consented. Royal 20 C VII f. 15 Pierredela Broce Sometimes spelled as Pierrede Brosse died June 30, 1278 was a royal favorite and councilor during the early part of the reign of Philip III of France . Dela Broce was from a family of petty nobility in Touraine , and was a minor household official for Louis IX of France Louis IX . After Louis death in 1270, dela Broce quickly became a favorite of the new king. He accumulated a substantial fortune, built from Philip s largesse and from gifts from those hoping to cultivate his influence with the king. This influence was greatly resented by many of the nobility and by associates of the Queen. In 1277 letters allegedly written by dela Broce were presented to Philip, which caused the king to have dela Broce arrested. He was finally hanged six months later. No trial was held, and the evidence was apparently suppressed, so the contents of the letters are unknown. Evidence has been put forward that dela Broce was framed.
