It is situated in the eastern Aegean Sea , close to the Turkey Turkish Aegean Coast. The island belongs to the municipality of Patmos , and has a population of 54 inhabitants at the 2001 census. Due to the small population there is no real Arki town capital , as such, though most inhabitants live close to the main harbour with the rest living scattered around the island on higher ground. The majority of the population find employment either in fishing, goat herding or helping to run one of the island s four tavernas. Geography The island is characterized by dry, rocky land with little in the way of vegetation apart from olive trees and some hardy shrubs. Fauna on the island mainly consists of livestock such as goat s or donkey s, though heron s can be spotted occasionally. The marine life in the bays around the island has not suffered as much as on other Greek Isles Greek islands with various species of grouper and nudibranch present. The island covers an area of 13.5  km . A census of the island in 1981 showed that it was populated by 133 people. In 1991, another census showed that the population had dropped to 112. By the 2001 census it had again risen to 158 residents, 144 of whom lived in Meg lo Chori , and only 14 in Mikr Chori . It is well serviced with ferries passing between Patmos and Leros and on the main route for ferries from Piraeus . Lipsi or Lipsous is a small group of islets at the northern part of the Dodecanese near to Patmos island and Leros. Leipsoi is a municipality, part of the Kalymnos regional unit Kalymnos regional unit , which is part of the South Aegean modern regions of Greece region . Geography The island contains springs at Fountani, alias Pikri Nero, in the area near Kimissi along with other minor springs also flowing in this region. The Cave of Ontas dominates the settlement. Most of the secluded and protected bays like Moschato Bay in the north on this island have been spoilt by fish farming. The water in these bays is often very cloudy with fish farm wastage. The less protected beaches are not polluted and easily reached by the road network. Roads have recently been reconstructed using European Union funding.
