Abe Lenstra November 27, 1920 in Heerenveen &ndash September 2, 1985 was a Netherlands Dutch football soccer football player and national football icon in the 1950s. He was also a Frisia n legend, most notably with the club where he made his name as a football player, SC Heerenveen . He played for a host of clubs such as SC Enschede, Enschedese Boys, PH DOS 19, WSV, DOS Kampen and vv LTC. However, it was with VV Heerenveen the previous name of current day SC Heerenveen where he first was selected for the Netherlands national football team Dutch national team . With the national team, for which he played a total of 47 caps scoring 33 goals, he struck a partnership with other internationals such as Faas Wilkes and Kees Rijvers . He was known to stand by his principles and objected to play for the national squad if he was not selected for the position he favoured, which explains his relatively low number of international caps. It was Lenstra who put the name of SC Heerenveen on the footballing map, where the club was also fondly referred to as Abeveen . For general purpose computer general purpose factoring, ECM is the third fastest known factoring method. The second fastest is the quadratic sieve multiple polynomial quadratic sieve and the fastest is the general number field sieve . The Lenstra elliptic curve factorization is named after Hendrik Lenstra . Practically speaking, ECM is considered a special purpose factoring algorithm as it is most suitable for finding small factors. As of 2006 alt Currently , it is still the best algorithm for divisor s not greatly exceeding 20 to 25 decimal digits 64 to 83 binary digit bit s or so , as its running time is dominated by the size of the smallest factor p rather than by the size of the number n to be factored. Frequently, ECM is used to remove small factors from a very large integer with many factors if the remaining integer is still composite, then it has only large factors and is factored using general purpose techniques. The largest factor found using ECM so far has 73 digits and was discovered on 6 March 2010 by Joppe Bos , Thorsten Kleinjung , ArjenLenstra and Peter Montgomery . ref http www.loria.fr zimmerma records top50.html 50 largest factors found by ECM ref Increasing the number ... in the number of digits. The LLL reduction algorithm LenstraLenstra Lov sz lattice basis reduction is a polynomial time lattice reduction algorithm invented by ArjenLenstra , Hendrik Lenstra and L szl Lov sz in 1982, see Harvnb LenstraLenstra Lov sz 1982 . Given as input a basis linear algebra basis math mathbf B mathbf b 1, mathbf b 2, dots, mathbf b d , math with n dimensional integer coordinates, for a lattice group lattice L in R sup n sup with math d leq n math , the LLL algorithm outputs an LLL reduced short, nearly orthogonal lattice basis in time math O d 5n log 3 B . , math . where B is the largest of the lengths of the math b i math under the Euclidean norm. The original applications were to give polynomial time algorithms for factorizing polynomials with rational coefficients into irreducible polynomials, for finding simultaneous rational approximations to real numbers, and for solving the linear programming integer linear programming problem in fixed dimensions. Lattice sieving is a technique for finding smooth number smooth values of a bivariate polynomial math f a,b math over a large region. It is almost exclusively used in conjunction with the number field sieve . The original idea of the lattice sieve came from John Pollard mathematician John Pollard . ref Arjen K. Lenstra and H. W. Lenstra, Jr. eds. . The development of the number field sieve . Lecture Notes in Math. 1993 1554. Springer Verlag. ref The algorithm implicitly involves the ideal ring theory ideal structure of the number field of the polynomial it takes advantage of the theorem that any prime ideal above some rational prime p can be written as math p mathbb Z alpha u v alpha mathbb Z alpha math . One then picks many prime numbers q of an appropriate size, usually just above the factor base limit, and proceeds by For each q , list the prime ideals above q by factorising the polynomial f a,b over math GF q math For each of these prime ideals, which are called special math mathfrak q math s, construct a lattice reduction reduced basis math mathbf x, mathbf y math for the lattice L generated by math mathfrak q math set a two dimensional array called the sieve region to zero. For each prime ideal math mathfrak p math in the factor base, construct a reduced basis math mathbf x mathfrak p, mathbf y mathfrak p math for the sublattice of L generated by math mathfrak pq math For each element of that sublattice lying within a sufficiently large sieve region, add math log mathfrak p math to that entry. Read out all the entries in the sieve region with a large enough value For the number field sieve application, it is necessary for two polynomials both to have smooth values this is handled by running the inner loop over both polynomials, whilst the special q can be taken from either side. Treatments of the inmost loop There are a number of clever approaches to implementing the inmost loop, since listing the elements of a lattice within a rectangular region efficiently i ... more details
The text The Magic Words are Squeamish Ossifrage was the solution to a challenge ciphertext posed by the inventors of the RSA algorithm RSA cipher in 1977. The problem appeared in Martin Gardner s Mathematical Games column in Scientific American . It was solved in 1993&ndash 1994 by a large joint computer project co ordinated by Derek Atkins , Michael Graff , Arjen Lenstra and Paul Leyland . More than 600 volunteers contributed Central processing unit CPU time from about 1,600 machines two of which were fax machines over six months. The coordination was done via the Internet and was one of the first such projects. Ossifrage is an older name for the lammergeier , a scavenging vulture that is famous for dropping animal bones and live tortoises onto rocks to crack them open. It might perhaps be considered among the least squeamish of creatures. The 1993 1994 effort began the tradition of using the words squeamish ossifrage in cryptanalysis cryptanalytic challenges. The difficulty of breaking the RSA cipher &mdash recovering a plaintext message given a ciphertext and the public key &mdash is connected to the difficulty of integer factorization factoring large numbers. While it is not known if the two problems are mathematically equivalent, factoring is currently the only method of directly breaking RSA. The decryption of the 1977 ciphertext involved the factoring of a 129 digit number, RSA 129 , in order to recover the plaintext . Ron Rivest estimated in 1977 that factoring a 125 digit number would require 40 1000000000000000 number quadrillion years, even with the highly conservative assumption that modular multiplication could be carried out in a nanosecond he therefore then believed that RSA 129 could never be broken in practice. What he failed to take into account was the possibility of progress in factoring algorithm s, and a lot of progress was made in the following decades. Atkins et al. used the quadratic sieve algorithm invented by Carl Pomerance in 1981. While ... more details
