He was the librarian of the Library of Alexandria library Alexandria of Alexandria and seems to have succeeded his teacher Aristophanes of Byzantium Aristophanes Byzantium of Byzantium in that role. He established the most historically important critical edition of the Homeric poems, and he is said to have applied his teacher s accent system to it, pointing the texts with a careful eye for metrical correctness. His rejection of doubtful lines ref Cic. ad Fam. iii.11.5, ix.10.1 in Pis. 30.73 ref made his severity proverbial ref Hor. A. P. 450 ref . It is likely that he, or more probably, another predecessor at Alexandria, Zenodotus , was responsible for the division of the Iliad and Odyssey into twenty four books each. According to the Suda , Aristarchus wrote 800 treatises polytonic on various topics these are all lost but for fragments preserved in the various scholia . Aristarchus or Aristarch of Tegea was a contemporary of Sophocles and Euripides , who lived to be a centenarian, to compose seventy pieces and to win two tragic victories. Only the titles of three of his plays Achilles , Asclepius , and Tantalus with a single line of the text, have come down to us, though Ennius freely borrowed from his play about Achilles . File Hesychius OP.jpg thumb 300px Beginning of letter pi letter , detail of Marc. Gr. 622. Hesychius of Alexandria , a grammar ian who flourished probably in the 5th century CE, compiled the richest lexicon of unusual and obscure Greek words that has survived in a single 15th century manuscript . The work, titled Alphabetical Collection of All Words , includes approximately 2640 entries, a copious list of peculiar words, forms and phrases, with an explanation of their meaning, and often with a reference to the author who used them or to the district of Greece where they were current. Hence, the book is of great value to the student of the Greek dialects, while in the restoration of the text of the classical authors generally, and particularly of such writers as Aeschylus and Theocritus , who used many unusual words, its value can hardly be exaggerated. Hesychius is important, not only for Greek philology, but also for studying lost languages and obscure dialects such as Thracian language Thracian and the ancient Macedonian language and in reconstructing Indo European languages Proto Indo European . Hesychius explanations of many epithets and phrases also reveal many important facts about the religion and social life of the ancients. In a prefatory letter Hesychius mentions that his lexicon is based on that of Diogenianus itself extracted from an earlier work by Pamphilus of Alexandria Pamphilus , but that he has also used similar works by the grammarian Aristarchus of Samothrace Aristarchus Samothrace of Samothrace , Apion , Heliodorus , Amerias and others. Hesychius was probably not a Religious conversion convert to Christianity . Explanations of words from Gregory Nazianzus and other Christian writers glossae sacrae are later interpolations. The lexicon survives in one deeply corrupt 15th century manuscript, which is preserved in the library of San Marco at Venice, Marc. Gr. 622, 15th century . The best ... more details

Unreferenced date July 2009 Image obelos.png thumb Three basic variants of dotted obelos glyphs. Obelism is the practice of annotating manuscript s with marks set in the margins. Modern obelisms are used by editors when blue penciling a manuscript or typescript. Examples are stet which is Latin for Let it stand, used in this context to mean disregard the previous mark and dele for Delete . The obelos symbol gets its name from the spit, or sharp end of a lance in ancient Greek . An obelos was placed by editors on the margins of manuscripts, especially in Homer , to indicate lines that were doubtfully Homer s. The system was developed by Aristarchus of Samothrace Aristarchus and notably used later by Origen in his Hexapla . Origen marked spurious words between obelos and metobelos. There were many other such shorthand symbols, to indicate corrections, emendations, deletions, additions, and so on. Most used are the editorial Coronis textual symbol coronis , the paragraphos , the forked paragraphos, the reversed forked paragraphos, the hypodiastole , the downwards ancora , the upwards ancora , and the Diple textual symbol dotted right pointing angle , which is also known as the diple periestigmene. Loosely, all these symbols, and the act of annotation by means of them, are obelism . These nine ancient Greek textual annotation symbols are also included in the supplemental punctuation list of ISO Universal Character Set IEC standard 10646 for character sets. gallery Image Coronis.png The coronis textual symbol coronis marked subsections.
