The aircraft caught fire during takeoff on March 22, 1984. The Boeing 737 taxied from the Calgary International Airport at 7 35 AM and proceeded to take off north on runway 34 16, carrying five crew members and 114 passengers. At 7 42 AM, a loud popping sound was heard 20 seconds into takeoff. The plane began to vibrate and pull to the left, and a fire broke out in the rear of the aircraft. The pilot, Stan Fleming, quickly aborted the take off. An emergency evacuation was ordered as the fire continued to roar. No one was killed. Five people were seriously injured and 22 suffered minor injuries. The plane burnt to the ground as fire crews attempted to stop the fire. The fire was attributed to a faulty compressor disc which blew apart, piercing the fuel tanks. This was similar to the cause of the British Airtours Flight 28M disaster which claimed 55 lives in 1985 . The Chronic Argonauts is a short story written by H. G. Wells . First published by the Royal College of Science in 1888 in literature 1888 , it is the first well developed use of a machine constructed to travel through time a time machine in science fiction, as it predates Wells s more famous time traveling novel, The Time Machine , by 7 years. Plot summary This brief story begins with a third person narrative third person account of the arrival of a mysterious inventor to the peaceful Wales Welsh town of Llyddwdd. Dr. Moses Nebogipfel takes up residence in a house sorely neglected after the deaths of its former inhabitants. The main bulk of the story concerns the apprehension of the simple rural folk who eventually storm the inventor s devilish workshop in an effort to repay supposed witchery. Nebogipfel escapes with one other person&mdash the sympathetic Reverend Elijah Ulysses Cook&mdash in what is later revealed to be a time travel time machine . The next part picks up with an unnamed Author character discovering the dazed Reverend Cook returned from unbelievable exploits after having been missing for three weeks. The remainder of the story is the Reverend s short retelling again in the third person of the events that took place that night and the revelation that Nebogipfel is an anachronism Anachronic Man whose genius drives him to seek out a time more suited to his abilities.
