  1. Romuald II of Benevento

Romuald II the Younger died 732 ref 724 in the Lexikon . ref was the son of Gisulf I of Benevento Gisulf I and Winiperga. He succeeded as duke of Benevento on the death of his father, which is dated variously as 698, 706, or 707. According to Paul the Deacon , Gisulf reigned 17 years, which would imply his death in 698, but Paul also mentions acts which seem certainly to have occurred around 705. He gives Romuald a reign of 26 years, which puts his death in either 724, 731, or 732. Romuald conflicted with both the Duchy of Spoleto and the Duchy of Naples during his long reign. Conflict with the latter brought him into conflict with the Papacy as well. He took the outlying castle of Cumae from John I of Naples in 716 and ignored Pope Gregory II s pleas and offers of compensation for restitution. In 717, the pope funded an expedition of John s which decisively defeated his gastald s army and displaced his men from Cuma. He succeeded Roffredo, Archbishop of Benevento Roffredo more than a year after the latter s death on 9 September 1107. The main source for his eventful reign is the contemporary chronicler and fellow Lombards Lombard and Benevento Benventan Falco of Benevento Falco . Landulf was a son of Gaideris, probably of local origin. Landulf was the cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina when he was elected archbishop. He was consecrated to his office by Pope Paschal II himself during a synod in Benevento lasting from October to November 1108. In 1112, he played an essential r le in the selection of rector for the territory. Despite these characteristics, Landulf was a supporter of the popular party and the Italo Normans Normans and opponent of the pro papal aristocracy, led by the papal constable Landulf of Greca . A great many feudi vassals of the archdiocese were Normans. Discord, however, reached such a level between the two Landulfs that the constable was forced to flee to Montefusco and the archbishop went to Rome in 1114 to seek mediation. The pope responded by sending a Romuald I Archbishop of Salerno Romuald , cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata , and Pietro Senex Peter , cardinal bishop of Porto , to arbitrate between the disputants.
