    Hugoton Natural Gas Area is a combination of large natural gas field s in the United States U.S. State of Kansas , the largest of which is the Hugoton Field. Its name is derived from the town of Hugoton, Kansas , near which the Hugoton Field was first discovered. History Natural gas in the Hugoton area was first discovered in 1922 in Seward County, Kansas Seward County , three miles west of Liberal, Kansas Liberal . Because this well did not produce petroleum oil , it was considered to have little value and remained unused for several years. In 1927, gas was discovered at the Independent Oil and Gas Company s Crawford No. 1, about 2,600 feet 790 meters below the surface southwest of Hugoton, Kansas , in Stevens County, Kansas Stevens County . This is now considered the center of the Hugoton Natural Gas Area. By the end of 1928, five wells had been drilled in the field and the first pipeline was transporting gas to local markets. In 1929, Argus Pipe Line Company started construction of a pipeline to furnish gas to Dodge City, Kansas . Construction of major pipelines in the 1930s encouraged further drilling in the area. The land was obtained by the City of Fort Worth in 1960 and designated a natural area in 1987. The park is currently managed by the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. Noted for its unusually complete collection of prairie flora, THNA contains more than 500 native plant species. The show of spring wildflowers is unsurpassed in the D FW Metroplex. The land is a living demonstration of how most of Fort Worth appeared in predevelopment times. THNA is adjacent to I 30 and less than 5 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The fact that it has never been developed and survived into the 21st century in relatively pristine condition is extremely remarkable.   1. Anders Run Natural Area

    Anders Run Natural Area is a convert 96 acre ha adj on protected area in Warren County, Pennsylvania Warren County , Pennsylvania . It is part of Cornplanter State Forest . It contains about convert 50 acre ha of old growth forest including the tree species Eastern White Pine , Eastern Hemlock , Cucumber Magnolia , American Beech , American Hornbeam , Prunus serotina Black Cherry , and oak s. Although parts of the natural area were logged during the first two decades of the 19th century, tree ring s of fallen trees have revealed 200 year old white pines and 400 year old hemlocks. In addition to being the oldest, these two tree species are also the largest, and some of the white pines are over convert 4 ft m in diameter at breast height . In addition to its forests, the Natural Area also has a stream with native trout and fine stands of wildflowers. There is a historic residence on the property built in 1841 called the Little Stone House . The Natural Area has about convert 2 mi km of hiking trails. The property was initially owned by the Alexander brothers, founders of the city of Alexandria, Virginia Alexandria , and was established in 1659 as Caledon Plantation.
