  1. London Area Control Centre

The London Area Control Centre LACC is an air traffic control centre based at Swanwick, Hampshire Swanwick near Fareham in Hampshire , southern England . It is operated by National Air Traffic Services NATS , starting operations on 27 January 2002, and handles aircraft over England and Wales . Internally within NATS it is usually known by the initials AC . LACC shares the Swanwick site with the London Terminal Control Centre LTCC , which moved there in 2007. AC based controllers provide air traffic services mainly within the London Flight Information Region FIR . This airspace is split into five Local Area Groups LAGs which relate to the position of the airspace sector groups within the FIR. All sectors have the R T callsign London Control . Also within the AC Operations room sit the FIR Flight Information Service Officers FISOs who provide an information service to aircraft operating within the London FIR as a whole using the callsign London Information . Swanwick Military controllers are also based in the AC Operations room. AC Local Area Groups and Sectors This section is incomplete Each sector is assigned a sector number which is used when co ordinating the passage of aircraft between each other. Colloquial names are also in use for each group of sectors and are sometimes used within the co ordination process when sectors are bandboxed together to indicate that one sector team is operating a whole group of sectors. LACC is unusual in that it uses Class A airspace at lower levels. Therefore VFR operation is prohibited. A major function is to operate a call centre call center to respond to inquiries from concerned citizens, generally prompted either by rumor s or a lack of information about what is happening. Permanent rumor control centers serve a specific, local population, and have often been set up in response to specific incidents. Modern communications channels, such as local Internet sites and regional 24 hour television news news channels may have begun to obviate the need for such operations. 1. Data center environmental control

no footnotes date January 2011 Multiple issues orphan January 2011 copyedit January 2011 Data center environmental control is the methodology of maintaining temperature, humidity, and other physical quantities of air in a limited range to allow the IT equipment housed in a data center to perform optimally throughout its lifespan . Air flow Typically a concept discussed in regard to data center s, air flow management is a strategy that addresses the need to improve data center equipment cooling efficiency by preventing the recirculation of hot air exhausted from IT equipment and reducing bypass airflow . Background Data centers house IT equipment recommended by IT vendors to operate within certain temperature ranges 70 75 degrees Fahrenheit . Also the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers ASHRAE sets recommended temperatures 68 77 degrees Fahrenheit and allowable 59 90 degrees Fahrenheit temperature ranges guidelines for IT equipment. Often today, with the ever growing information processing densities, data center servers continually run the risk of producing heat that goes well beyond these guidelines, even when using the now commoditized precision cooling units. Overheating of data center equipment can result in Reduced server performance or total non functionality due to re circulated, hot exhaust air from IT equipment finding its way into an IT inlet. Precision cooling equipment being set at temperatures lower than recommended due to air stratification or the layering of different temperature air mass es in the data center. 1. Switching Control Center System

The Switching Control Center System was an Operations Support System developed by Bell Laboratories and deployed during the early 1970s. This computer system was first based on the PDP 11 product line from Digital Equipment Corporation and used the CB Unix operating system and custom application software and device drivers that was developed and maintained by Bell Labs in Columbus, Ohio USA. SCCS was ported to the AT&T Computer Systems AT&T 3B20 and 3B5 computers running UNIX System V Release 2 in the early 1980s. Prior to the SCCS, many telephone company switching centers were staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Deployment of the SCCS allowed telephone companies to significantly reduce the number of technicians by implementing a local switching control center office and dispatch technicians as required to resolve problems or perform Planned maintenance routine maintenance operations. During the early 1970s, telephone companies began to phase out the older electromechanical switching systems such as the 1XB switch Number 1 Crossbar , 5XB switch Number 5 Crossbar , and Strowger switch Step By Step circuit switching systems and replace them with newer electronic switching system s that were controlled by proprietary computers but still used analog switch fabrics such as Bell proprietary http www.ieee.org portal cms docs iportals iportals aboutus history center oral history pdfs Andrews380.pdf fereed switch devices .
