About a chain of islands Image MerguiArchipelagoMap.png thumb The Mergui Archipelago An archipelago IPAc en icon r k p l o respell ark i PEL goh or islands or island group is a chain or cluster of island s. The word archipelago is derived from the Greek language Greek arkhi chief and p lagos sea through the Italian arcipelago . In Italian language Italian , possibly following a tradition of Ancient Greece antiquity , the Arcipelago from medieval Greek Linguistic reconstruction was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands . It is now used to generally refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a large number of scattered islands like the Aegean Sea . ref cite web url http www.thefreedictionary.com archipelago title Archipelago accessdate 2008 10 02 year 2008 publisher Farlex, Inc. archiveurl http www.thefreedictionary.com archipelago archivedate 2008 ref Types of archipelago Image Ksamil Islets.jpg thumb left 235px The Ksamil Islands Ksamil Archipelago in Albania Image Fernando noronha.jpg thumb left 235px The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha Archipelagos can be found isolated in bodies of water or a large land mass may neighbour them. Geologie Archipelago coor dm 66 39 S 139 55 E is a small archipelago of rocky islands and rocks close north of Cape Geodesie and Astrolabe Glacier Tongue , extending from Helene Island on the west to Dumoulin Islands on the east. The French expedition under Captain Jules Dumont d Urville landed on Debarquement Rock in the Dumoulin Islands in January 1840. Because rock samples were obtained, they gave the name Pointe Geologie to a coastal feature charted as lying south of Debarquement Rock. The archipelago was delineated, in part, from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump , 1946 47. Following surveys by French Antarctic Expedition parties during the 1950 52 period, the French gave the name Archipel de Pointe Geologie to the entire archipelago, as d Urville s coastal feature is believed to correlate with portions of the cluster of islands close north of Astrolabe Glacier Tongue. usgs gazetteer Category Geography of Antarctica EAntarctica geo stub ... more details
