Context date July 2008 Notability date July 2008 The Thad Cochran Center is the newest building on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi . It is the epicenter for most activities that take place on the campus. While considered an expansion of the R.C Cook Student Union rather than a new building , the Cochran Center has large upgrades. The Cochran Center is named after Senator Thad Cochran , due to his large role in securing the government funds for construction. The center is 4 stories tall, and has many amenities. The Cochran Center provides meeting spaces for student organizations, as well as off campus groups. The second phase of construction is set to begin soon, with the opening of a theatre on the second floor of the complex. The ground level or basement section of the building is the new home of the university s post office. It is also home to the offices of Aramark , who is in charge of providing the dining for the university. The first floor houses the Fresh Food Company the school s cafeteria and the textbook center, featuring a small Barnes & Noble. The final touch on the first floor is the mural University Bounty , painted by a Southern Mississippi art instructor. It is part of CIBC s head office operations outside of Commerce Court and the main quarters of CIBC Credit Card Services, including Visa call centres. The Visa call centre is a member of the Steel Workers Union in Toronto. The Visa call centre is the only unionized department in CIBC. It consists of two buildings, one six stories West and the other, ten stories East , built by Toronto based firm Bregman Hamann Architects B H in 1981. B H is the same firm involved in renovations in 2001. The building, at one time owned by CIBC, has been owned by commercial developer CB Richard Ellis since the late 1990s. It is located in Lawrence Heights across the street from Lawrence Square Shopping Centre and a short walk to Lawrence West TTC Lawrence West subway station. The building was damaged in 2001 on its west side by a large fire at a housing development located directly to the west. The building once housed an internal branch for employees. The branch was a sub unit of the head office branch at Commerce Court. The branch has since closed and renovated as lounges and conference rooms.
