The Fortress of Arad was built on the left bank of the Mure River by order of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa Maria Theresa of Habsburg . The project was made after the plans of the Austrian general and architect Ferdinand Philipp von Harsch in Vauban Tenaille style, having the form of a star with six corners, builded with three rows of underground pillboxes and several trenches which in past could be flooded. The construction was made in 20 years from 1763 to 1783 with thousands of prisoners. The main gate entrance and the buildings inside were built in the Baroque style. Inside the city there is a catholic church and in the surrounding buildings were housed Franciscan monks, under the patronage of St. John of Capistrano .
