These are birds of tropical Asia , with the greatest number of species occurring in hills of the Himalayas . Scimitar babblers are rangy, medium sized, floppy tailed land birds with soft fluffy plumage. They have strong legs and are quite terrestrial. This group is not strongly bird migration migratory , and most species have short rounded wings, and a weak flight. Scimitar babblers have long downcurved bills, used to work through the leaf litter, which give the group its name. They are typically long tailed, dark brown above, and white or orange brown below. Many have striking head patterns, with a broad black band through the eye, bordered with white above and below. Most scimitar babblers are jungle species, difficult to observe in the dense vegetation they prefer, but like other babblers, these are noisy birds, and the characteristic bubbling calls are often the best indication that these birds are present. As with other babbler species, they frequently occur in groups of up to a dozen, and the rain forest species like Indian Scimitar babbler often occur in the mixed species feeding flock mixed feeding flocks typical of tropical Asian jungle. The genus contains four species that are endemism endemic to New Guinea . The genus was once considered to contain the Rail babbler , but that species is now considered to belong to its own family. The genus is closely related to the better known quail thrush es Cinclosoma of New Guinea and Australia . Together with a number of other genera they comprise the family biology family Cinclosomatidae, although the validity of this family as a whole has been questioned. The jewel babblers resemble the quail thrushes in shape, being plump, long tailed and short winged. They are adapted to life on the forest floor. The plumage of this genus is the most striking divergence from the quail thrushes, having large amounts of blue and often with chestnut on the back. The throats of all species are white and the patch is mostly surrounded by a black edge. There is moderate levels of sexual dimorphism in the plumage, except in the Dimorphic Jewel babbler where the female has no blue and is all chestnut coloured. When moving they hold the body horziontally to the ground, and bob their heads back and forth in a similar fashion to pigeon s, and move their tail in a fashion similar to wagtail s. The jewel babblers as a whole are not a well known or studied genus. The Old World babblers are a large family of Old World passerine bird s characterised by soft fluffy plumage. These are birds of tropical areas, with the greatest variety in southeast Asia . The Blackcap Babbler is a common resident breeding bird in west Africa from Senegal to Cameroon . Its habitat is thick scrub and forest. The normal clutch is two or three eggs. These birds have dark grey brown upperparts. The head is brownish black with a white throat and conspicuous white eye ring. The underparts are white, mottled on the breast and with buff flanks. The Blackcap Babbler lives in flocks of four to twelve or more, which help to raise the young communally. It is a noisy bird, and the presence of a flock may generally be known at some distance by the continual chattering, squeaking and chirping produced by its members. The main call is a cha ka ta . It feeds mainly on insects, but also eats fruit. The binomial commemorates the botanist Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt . This species was first observed by the ornithologists Zhou Fang ornithologist Zhou Fang and Jiang Aiwu while surveying the Nonggang Natural Reserve in the Guangxi , China , in February 2005. The type specimen was captured in January 2006, and the species was Scientific description formally described in 2008. In appearance it is similar to the Sooty Babbler S. herberti , but differs in having a pale Iris anatomy iris , a white crescent behind the ear, a white throat patch with black spots, and a black bill. In general behaviour it resembles a wren babbler of the genus Napothera in that it prefers running to flying, and seems to spend most of its time on the ground foraging for insects between rocks and under fallen leaves. Its natural habitat is karst seasonal rainforest that, following selective cutting , is dominated by Burretiodendron hsienmu . The known range is currently restricted to the Nonggang Natural Reserve, but since similar habitat also exists in northern Vietnam and south east Yunnan , China, it is possible the species may also be found there.
