It was very popular in Russia and former USSR in mid 1990s. It was produced in Zelenograd , Russia by PO KSI . Features Using low cost VHS tapes and recording units for data backup. High reliability Hamming code error correction Easy data copying between two VHS units eliminating need of a computer for data copying Disadvantages Inefficient tape capacity usage only 2 grades of luminance signal spectrum were used Poor software support Operation A VHS recorder unit should be connected to an ArVid ISA board via a composite video cable. Unit operation is controlled by a remote control emulator using a LED . Device may operate in two modes low data rate at 200 kilobyte kbyte s and high data rate at 325 kbyte s. Not all VHS recorders of the time were capable to support the latter. An VHS Tape lengths E 180 video tape is able to hold 2 Gb of Data compression uncompressed data. Models ArVid 1010 was first of ArVid devices. Its production started in 1992. ArVid 1020 was a successor to ArVid 1010 using more advanced integrated circuit ry. ArVid 1030 1031 had better internal design, less power consumption, was less in size and was made using Complex programmable logic device CPLD . It allowed automatic switching to a TV set when device was not in use. ArVid 1051 1052 introduced 325 kbyte s data rate and 128 512 kbyte buffer cache respectively . File Portrait of swedish professor arvid lindau.jpg thumb Arvid Lindau Arvid Lindau 23 July 1892 &ndash 1958 was a Swedish pathologist born in Malm . During his career he published more than forty papers on pathology, neurology , and bacteriology . At the Institute of Pathological Anatomy in Lund he wrote an important thesis titled Studien ber Kleinhirncysten. Bau, Pathogenese und Beziehungen zur Angiomatosae retinae , in which he described the relationship between cerebellum cerebellar cysts and their correlation to tumors angiomata of the retina . In 1926, Lindau was the first to describe a coherent link between the retinal, cerebellar and visceral components of a disease he called angiomatosis of the central nervous system . This disease is characterized by tumors of the retina and the brain, along with cysts of several visceral organs such as the kidneys , pancreas , and adrenal gland s. Lindau s research soon attracted the attention of famed neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing , who named the disorder, Lindau s disease . However it wasn t until 1964, that early 20th century research conducted by ophthalmologist Eugen von Hippel on retinal angiomata became more apparent. Today the disease is named after both men, and is called Von Hippel Lindau disease . Image Arvid storsveen minnestein.jpg thumb Commemorative plaque for Arvid Storsveen Arvid Kristian Storsveen 9 July 1915 27 April 1943 , was the Norway Norwegian organizer of XU , the main intelligence gathering organisation within occupied Norway during World War II . Biography Arvid Kristian Storsveen was born in Aker, Norway . Storsveen studied engineering at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim . After graduation in 1939, he was employed at the Norwegian Water Resources and Electricity in Oslo . Lt. Storsveen took part in the Norwegian Campaign against the Germany German invasion forces in the spring of 1940 and, following the Norwegian surrender, he soon saw the value of an intelligence gathering organisation for the Allies. This XU organisation was started as early as July 1940 and became a reliable source of information for the Supreme Allied Commander in London . After two years of dangerous work, Storsveen was forced to flee to Sweden in July 1942, successfully evading the German units who were tracking him down. He returned to Oslo in the spring of 1943, but due to an unfortunate accident he was found and killed by the Gestapo on April 27. Storsveen s discipline was maintained to the very end the false documentation found on his person meant that, even after his death, the Gestapo never realised the true identity of the man they had killed and so his organisation was able to recover from the incident. ref http www.snl.no .nbl biografi Arvid Storsveen utdypning Arvid Storsveen Store norske leksikon ref Legacy In 1943, 1st Lt.
