It was constructed in 312 BC by Appius Claudius Caecus , the same Roman Censor ancient Rome censor who also built the important Via Appia . Its source, which Frontinus identifies as being about 780 Pace unit of length paces away from via Praenestina , was allegedly established by Caius Plautius Venox . The Aqua Appia flowed for 16.4 km into the city of Rome through the Porta Maggiore , and emptied into the Forum Boarium , near the Porta Trigemina . Nearly all of its length was underground, which was necessary because of the relative heights of its source and destination, and afforded it protection from attackers during the Samnite Wars that were underway during its construction. Cassius Longinus. Its source was at the Alban hills, running only a mere 18 kilometers to Rome . The water from the Aqua Tepula, as implied in the name, was tepid and lukewarm, and thus was, as Frontinus states, not fit for human consumption. Problems The Aqua Tepula s waters were, as stated by Frontinus, lukewarm. In 33 BC, M. Viscus Agrippa attempted to cool its waters by mixing the Aqua Tepula s waters with that of a recent aqueduct, the Aqua Marcia . The water was mixed in a clearing basin then was split into two separate lines that reached their separate terminus. Superimposed on the Marcia, the Tepula was the highest aqueduct, and thus able to deliver water over many parts. However, the cost of the Marcia and the poor quality of water stemmed its could have been success. The smallest aqueduct, it delivered 17,800 cubic meters per day, a scant amount in Roman times. The Aqua Virgo was completed in 19 BC by Marcus Agrippa , during the reign of the emperor Augustus . Its source is along the 8th milestone of the Via Collatina , about 3 km from the Via Praenestina . According to a legend repeated by Frontinus , thirsty Roman soldiers asked a young girl for water. She directed them to the springs that later supplied the aqueduct. The source was named the Aqua Virgo after her. Along its more than 20 km length, the aqueduct dropped only 4 m to reach Rome in the center of the Campus Martius . At its height, the aqueduct was capable of supplying more than 100,000 cubic meters of water every day. The aqueduct ran underground for nearly all of its length.
