The ventricular septum is directed obliquely backward and to the right, and is curved with the convexity toward the right ventricle its margins correspond with the anterior and posterior longitudinal sulci . Portions The greater portion of it is thick and muscular and constitutes the muscular ventricular septum . Its upper and posterior part, which separates the aortic vestibule from the lower part of the right atrium and upper part of the right ventricle, is thin and fibrous, and is termed the membranous ventricular septumseptum membranaceum . Development The muscular part of the interventricular septum derives from the bulboventricular flange which is developed due to differential growth of primitive ventricle and bulbous cordis. Membranous part has a neural crest origin which connects the upper free margin of the bulboventricular flange and anterior and posterior endocardial cussions of atrio ventricular valve. it also gets attached to lower border of spiral septum or the aortico pulmonary septum. This makes its appearance in three portions. 1 Two distal ridge like thickenings project into the lumen of the tube these increase in size, and ultimately meet and fuse to form a septum, which takes a spiral course toward the proximal end of the truncus arteriosus . It divides the distal part of the truncus into two vessels, the aorta and pulmonary artery, which lie side by side above, but near the heart the pulmonary artery is in front of the aorta . 2 Four endocardial cushions appear in the proximal part of the truncus arteriosus in the region of the future semilunar valves the manner in which these are related to the aortic septum is described below. 3 Two endocardial thickenings anterior and posterior develop in the bulbus cordis and unite to form a short septum this joins above with the aortic septum and below with the ventricular septum. The septum grows down into the ventricle as an oblique partition, which ultimately blends with the ventricular septum in such a way as to bring the bulbus cordis into communication with the pulmonary artery , and through the latter with the sixth pair of aortic arches while the left ventricle is brought into continuity with the aorta, which communicates with the remaining aortic arches. System MeshName Heart Septum MeshNumber A07.541.459 The interatrial septum is the wall of tissue that separates the right atrium right and left atrium left atria of the heart . Development The interatrial septum forms during the first and second months of fetal development . Formation of the septum occurs in several stages. The first is the development of the septum primum , a crescent shaped piece of tissue forming the initial divider between the right and left atria. Because of its crescent shape, the septum primum does not fully occlude the space between left and right atria the opening that remains is called the ostium primum . During fetal development, this opening allows blood to be shunted from the right atrium to the left. As the septum primum grows, the ostium primum progressively narrows. Before the ostium primum is completely occluded, a second opening called the ostium secundum begins to form in the septum primum . The ostium secundum allows continued shunting of blood from the right atrium to the left. To the right of the septum primum, the septum secundum begins to form. This thick, muscular structure initially takes on the same crescent shape as the septum primum, except that it originates anteriorly, whereas the septum primum originates posteriorly. As the septum secundum grows, it leaves a small opening called the foramen ovale . The foramen ovale is continuous with the ostium secundum ... of the septum primum diminishes. Eventually, the septum primum is nothing more than a small ... that occurs when the interatrial septum fails to develop properly. Unreferenced date December 2009 Image NautilusCutawayLogarithmicSpiral.jpg thumb Cutaway of a nautilus shell showing the chambers Septa singular septum are thin walls or partitions between the internal chambers camerae of the Animal shell shell of a cephalopod , namely nautiloid s or Ammonoidea ammonoid s. As the creature grows, its body moves forward in the shell to a new living chamber , secreting septa behind it. This adds new chambers to the shell, which can be clearly seen in cross sections of the shell of the living nautilus , or in ammonoid and nautiloid fossil s. The septa are attached to the inside wall of the shell, thus dividing the phragmocone into camerae. Where the septum meets the shell a suture anatomical suture line forms in some ammonoids these lines became extremely complex and elaborate, providing strength without the necessity of added weight. Elaborate sutures allowed for thinner shells, and hence less time needed for shell growth and less time spent in the vulnerable juvenile stage. The nature and structure of the septa, as with the camerae, and siphuncle , and the presence or absence of deposits, are important in classification of nautiloids. In some nautiloids, such as the Orthoceratidae , the septa tend to be widely spaced, resulting in large, long camarae. In others such as the Ellesmerocerida , Oncocerida and Discosorida the septa are crowded closely together. In some Orthocone straight shelled forms like Actinoceras , calcium carbonate deposits extend from the camera mural deposits to the septa episeptal deposits . Septa can be used to identify extinct coral Order Rugosa and may be arranged as cardinal proseptum, counter proseptum, alar proseptum orcounter lateral proseptum.
