AntoineCourt 1696 1760 was a French people French reformer called the Restorer of Protestantism in France. He was born at Villeneuve de Berg , in Languedoc , March 27, 1696. His parents were peasant s, adherents of the Reformed churches Reformed church , which was then undergoing persecution . When but 17 years old, Court began to speak at the secret meetings of the Protestantism Protestants , held literally in dens and caves of the earth, and often in darkness, with no pastor present to teach or counsel. Proposals He entertained a great desire to build up the church so ruthlessly persecuted and to this end he proposed four things 1 regular religious meetings for teaching and worship 2 suppression of the fanaticism of those who professed to be inspired, and of the consequent disorders 3 restoration of discipline by the establishment of consistories, conferences, and synods 4 the careful training of a body of pastors. To the performance of this great task he devoted his life. From audiences of half a dozen meeting in secret, he came to address openly 10,000 at one time. In 1715 he convoked the first Synod of the Desert . Resistance In 1724 further fury was hurled at the Protestants in a decree which assumed that there were no Protestants in France and prohibited the most secret exercise of the Reformed religion. A price was set on Court s head, and in 1730 he fled to Lausanne , Switzerland ... Paris, 1885 1891 Publications E. Hugues, AntoineCourt Paris, 1872 E. Hugues, Les synodes du d sert ... The long title is usually abbreviated to A Huguenot or A Huguenot on St Bartholomew s Day . It depicts a pair of young lovers in an embrace. The familiar subject is given a dramatic twist because the embrace is in fact an attempt by the girl to get her beloved to wear a white armband, declaring his allegiance to Roman Catholicism . The young man gently pulls the armband off with the same hand with which he embraces the girl. The incident refers to the St. Bartholomew s Day massacre in 1572 when French Protestants Huguenots were massacred in Paris, leading to other massacres elsewhere in France. A small number of Protestants escaped from the city by wearing white armbands. Millais had initially planned simply to depict lovers, but had been persuaded by his Pre Raphaelite colleague William Holman Hunt that the subject was too trite. After seeing Giacomo Meyerbeer s opera Les Huguenots , which tells the story of the massacre, Millais adapted the painting to refer to the event. In the opera the character Valentine also attempts unsuccessfully to get her lover Raoul to wear the armband. ref name Tate Gallery 1984, p.99 Tate Gallery, The Pre Raphaelites , 1984, p.99 ref The choice of a pro Protestant subject was also significant because the Pre Raphaelites had previously been attacked for their alleged ... on to produce a number of other paintings on similar subjects. File St Aug Huguenot Cem01.jpg thumb 300px The cemetery in 2011 The Huguenot Cemetery in St. Augustine, Florida located across from the historic City Gate was a Protestant burial ground between the years 1821 and 1884. The Spanish colonial city of St. Augustine, along with the entire Florida Territory became defacto American possessions after the 1819 signing of the Adams Onis Treaty . The actual physical occupation of the city and Florida territory occurred in 1821. Prior to American occupation the Spanish city of St. Augustine was predominately Catholic and the only burial ground within the city, the Tolomato cemetery, was reserved for Catholics. Recognizing a need for a formal Protestant burial ground an area just outside the city gate was chosen by the new American administration in St. Augustine. The first burials occurred in 1821 just prior to a yellow fever epidemic which claimed the lives of a large numbers of the city s inhabitants. The cemetery until title to the cemetery property was acquired by the Rev. Thomas Alexander, who then turned over it to the Memorial Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church in 1832, burials continued until 1884 when both Huguenot and Tolomato cemeteries were closed. The cemetery is believed to hold at least 436 burials according to city records. Membership was extended to descendants of families which emigrated to America or to other countries prior to the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration , November 28, 1787, as well as to writers who had made the history of the Huguenot s a special subject of study. The society headquarters are in New York City, where a valuable library, consisting of Huguenot books, manuscripts, etc., had been collected. There were branch societies in several States and cities, notably in Virginia , Pennsylvania , South Carolina , and New Jersey . Its publications were known as Collections of the Huguenot Society of America. In 1898 it celebrated the tercentenary anniversary of the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes , at which delegates from societies abroad were present. A memorial volume containing a full account of the exercises was published in 1900. The Huguenot Society of America is sometimes confused with the similarly named but unaffiliated National Huguenot Society , which was founded in 1956. It carries State Route 147 Virginia State Route 147 across the former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway now the James River Line of CSX Transportation , the James River and Kanawha Canal , and the James River Virginia James River in the fall line region above the head of navigation at Richmond. The Huguenot Memorial Bridge was completed in 1950. The 2900  ft span replaced the low level Westham Bridge which had been built as a toll bridge in 1911, and had been subject to flooding and was inadequate for traffic in the growing suburban area. The Huguenot Memorial Bridge was named in honor of the French Huguenot settlers who came to the area in the 18th century to escape religious persecution in France. It is owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation VDOT and is the western most bridge over the James River in the metropolitan Richmond area that is open to pedestrians. The current bridge is facing significant structural issues. After years of problems maintaining the deck and pavement, as of 2008, a replacement was included in the limited number of high priority projects underway with the Virginia Department of Transportation VDOT .
