File Anatolian Plate.png thumb Anatolian Plate The Anatolian Plate is a continental tectonic plate consisting primarily of the country of Turkey . The easterly side is a boundary with the Arabian Plate , the East Anatolian Fault , a left lateral transform fault . ref cite news title Modeling the contemporary stress field and deformation pattern of eastern Mediterranean author Dwivedi S.K., and Hayashi, D., 2010 publisher Journal of Earth Science Published by Springer url http www.springerlink.com content 7041rg58xg133k47 ref The southerly and southwesterly sides comprise a convergent boundary with the African Plate , manifest in compressive features of the oceanic crust beneath the Mediterranean as well as within the continental crust of Anatolia itself, and also by what are generally considered to be subduction zones along the Hellenic arc Hellenic and Cyprus Arc s. The northerly side is a transform boundary with the Eurasian Plate forming the North Anatolian Fault Zone NAFZ . Research indicates that the Anatolian Plate is rotating counterclockwise as it is being pushed west by the Arabian Plate, impeded from any northerly movement by the Eurasian Plate. In some references, the Anatolian Plate is referred to as a block of continental crust still coupled to the Eurasian Plate. But studies of the North Anatolian Fault indicate that Anatolia is de coupled from the Eurasian Plate. It is now being squeezed by the Arabian Plate from the east and forced toward the west as the Eurasian Plate to its north is blocking motion in that direction. The African Plate is subducting beneath the Anatolian Plate along the Cyprus and Hellenic Arcs offshore in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms the transform fault transform type tectonic boundary between the Anatolian Plate and the northward moving Arabian Plate . The difference in the relative motions of the two plates is manifest in the left lateral motion along the fault. The East and North Anatolian faults together accommodate the westward motion of the Anatolian Plate as it is squeezed out by the ongoing collision with the Eurasian Plate . The East Anatolian Fault runs in a northeasterly direction, starting from the Maras Triple Junction at the northern end of the Dead Sea Transform , and ending at the Karliova Triple Junction where it meets the North Anatolian Fault . From 1939 to 1999 a series of earthquakes progressed westwards along the North Anatolian Fault. But since 2003 there have been a series on the East Anatolian Fault. These started with the 2003 Bing l earthquake and include the 2010 El z earthquake . ref cite news title Turkey earthquake reveals a new active fault zone first Wendy last Zukerman url http www.newscientist.com article dn21083 turkey earthquake reveals a new active fault zone.html newspaper New Scientist date 24 October 2011 accessdate 25 October 2011 ref References references http www.koeri.boun.edu.tr depremmuh eqspecials bingol bingol eq.htm TECTONICS 20OF 20THE 20REGION MAY 1, 2003 B NG L TURKEY EARTHQUAKE Preliminary Report Updated on May 13, 2003 Category Seismic faults of Turkey Tectonics stub it Faglia Anatolica Orientale pl Uskok wschodnioanatolijski pt Falha Oriental da Anat lia tr Do u Anadolu Fay Hatt uk zh ...   more details
