Formation of ammonium compounds can also occur in the vapor phase for example, when ammonia vapor comes in contact with hydrogen chloride vapor, a white cloud of ammonium chloride forms, which eventually settles out as a solid in a thin white layer on surfaces. The conversion of ammonium back to ammonia is easily accomplished by the addition of strong base. Ammonium salts Ammonium cation is found in a variety of salt chemistry salt s such as ammonium carbonate , ammonium chloride , and ammonium nitrate . Most simple ammonium salts are very soluble in water. An exception is ammonium hexachloroplatinate , the formation of which was once used as a test for ammonium. The ammonium salts of nitrate and especially perchlorate are highly explosive, in these cases ammonium is the reducing agent. In an unusual ... more details

It was originally invented in the Soviet Union , but remained classified until it was discovered independently in the United States in 1989 at SRI International. SRI obtained US and international patents for ADN in the mid 1990s at which time scientist from the former Soviet Union revealed they had discovered ADN in the 1970s. It makes an excellent solid rocket oxidizer with a slightly higher specific impulse than ammonium perchlorate and more importantly, does not leave hydrogen chloride fumes. The salt is prone to detonation under high temperatures and shock more so than the perchlorate . It can be synthesized from ammonium nitrate , nitric acid , and super concentrated sulfuric acid , to which a base other than ammonia must be added before the acid dinitramide decomposes. Ammonium polyphosphate is an inorganic salt of polyphosphoric acid and ammonia containing both chains and possibly branching. Its chemical formula is NH sub 4 sub PO sub 3 sub sub n sub showing that each monomer consists of an orthophosphate radical of a phosphorus atom with three oxygen s and one negative charge neutralized by an ammonium cation leaving two bonds free to polymerize . In the branched cases some monomers are missing the ammonium anion and instead link to three other monomers. The properties of ammonium polyphosphate depend on the number of monomers in each molecule and to a degree on how often it branches. Shorter chains n 100 are more water sensitive and less thermally stable than longer chains n 1000 , ref http www.sinoharvest.com products Ammonium Polyphosphate.shtml ref but short polymer chains e.g. pyro , tripoly , and tetrapoly are more soluble and show increasing solubility with increasing chain length. ref cite patent US 4041133 ref Ammonium polyphosphate can be prepared by reacting concentrated phosphoric acid with ammonia. Unreferenced date May 2010 Ammonium diuranate or ADU NH sub 4 sub sub 2 sub U sub 2 sub O sub 7 sub , is one of the intermediate chemical forms of uranium produced during yellowcake production. The name yellowcake originally given to this bright yellow substance, now applies to mixtures of uranium oxides which are actually hardly ever yellow. It also is an intermediate in mixed oxide MOX fuel fabrication. It is precipitate d during production by adding aqueous ammonium hydroxide after uranium extraction by tertiary amine s in an organic kerosene solvent. This precipitate is then thickened and centrifuged before being Calcination calcined to uranium oxide . Canadian practice favours the production of uranium oxide from ammonium diuranate, rather than from uranyl nitrate as is the case elsewhere. Ammonium diuranate was once used to produce colored glazes in ceramics.
