  1. Amali dynasty

The Amali , also called Amals or Amalings , were the leading dynasty of the Goths , a Germanic tribes Germanic people who confronted the Roman Empire in its declining years in the west. According to Gothic legend, the Amali were descended from an ancient hero whose deeds earned him the epithet of Amala or mighty. However, the Goths branched into two groups around the year 200 the Ostrogoth s and the Visigoth s. And by 395 their histories had become significantly separated. Edward Gibbon writes, in the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire http etext.library.adelaide.edu.au g g43d chapter31.html Chapter 31, footnote 160 the true hereditary right to the Gothic sceptre was vested in the Amali but those princes, who were the vassals of the Huns, commanded the tribes of the Ostrogoths in some distant parts of Germany or Scythia. In this vacuum, the rival Balti dynasty , predominant among the Visigoths in Italy and Gaul , was able to assume the Visigothic leadership. For it was Alaric I Alaric the Visigoth, a member of the latter dynasty, who led his people in the sacking of Rome in 410 . This success, and the dynasty of kings Alaric created, heightened tensions between the two families, leading to the Amali usurping the Visigothic throne in 415 , making Sigeric king. But Sigeric s reign lasted only seven days before he was assassinated and the Balti dynasty resumed a powerful rule that didn t end until 531. It can be generally said that, beginning in 395, the Amali were the royal house of the Ostrogoths while the Balti were that of the Visigoths. In the Nibelungenlied and some other medieval German epic poems, the followers of Dietrich von Bern are referred to as Amelungen . In other cases, Amelung is reinterpreted as the name of one of Dietrich s ancestors. The Kaiserchronik ..., two families claimed they had descended from Amali. 1. Sigeric

Other persons Sigeric was a Visigoth king for seven days in 415 CE. His predecessor, Ataulf , had been mortally wounded in his stables at the palace of Barcelona by an assassin. The assassin was probably a loyal servant of Sarus Goth Sarus , a Gothic noble and personal enemy whom Ataulf had earlier slain. At Ataulf s death, Sarus faction, the Amali , violated the laws of succession by immediately making Sigeric, the brother of Sarus, king. Edward Gibbon writes in the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire that the first act of Sigeric s reign was the inhuman murder of Ataulf s six children from a former marriage whom he tore, without pity, from the feeble arms of a venerable bishop. As for Ataulf s widow, Galla Placidia , daughter of Roman Emperor Theodosius I Theodosius , she was treated with cruel and wanton insult by being forced to walk more than twelve miles on foot among the crowd of captives driven ahead of the mounted Sigeric. Seeing the noble widow s sufferings, however, became one of the factors that roused indignant opponents of the usurper, who quickly assassinated Sigeric and replaced him with Ataulf s relative, Wallia . Because Sigeric was an Amali, a member of a rival clan based subgroup among the Visigoths to the Balti of which Ataulf and Wallia were part , then, in the succession of kings usually labeled the Balti dynasty , Sigeric is the only one who does not belong if the kingship is defined by Balthi dynastic connections. Due to this fact, to the nature of his reign as an usurpation, and to the shortness of his rule, Sigeric does not appear on some Visigothic king lists. She was married in 515 to Eutharic b. ca 480 522 , an Ostrogoth noble of the old Amali Amal line, who had previously been living in Visigoths Visigothic Iberian peninsula Iberia , son of Widerich b. ca 450 , grandson of Berismund b. ca 410 , and great grandson of Thorismund d. aft. 400 , King of the Ostrogoths ca 400. Her husband died, apparently in the early years of her marriage, leaving her with two children, Athalaric and Matasuntha ca 517 aft. 550 , wife ca 550 of Germanus cousin of Justinian I Germanus . On the death of her father in 526, her son succeeded him, but she held the power as regent for her son. Deeply imbued with the old Roman culture, she gave to that son s education a more refined and literary turn than suited the ideas of her Gothic subjects. Conscious of her unpopularity she banished, and afterwards put to death, three Gothic nobles whom she suspected of intriguing against her rule, and at the same time opened negotiations with the emperor Justinian I with the view of removing herself and the Gothic treasure to Constantinople . Her son s death in 534 made little change in the posture of affairs. Now queen, Amalasuntha made her cousin Theodahad partner of her throne not, as sometimes stated, her husband, for his wife was still living , with the intent of strengthening her position. The choice was unfortunate, for Theodahad fostered the disaffection of the Goths, and either by his orders or with his permission, Amalasuntha was imprisoned in the island of Martana in the Tuscan ...   more details

  1. Rodelinda (6th century)

Rodelinda was a Lombards Lombard List of queens of the Lombards queen who lived in the 6th century. She was the wife of king Audoin and mother of king Alboin . ref Jarnut 1995, p. 19 ref She was the first wife of Audoin , regent for the infant List of kings of the Lombards king of the Lombards Walthari from 540 to 546 547 and king in his own right from 546 547 to an uncertain date after 552, and gave him a son, his successor Alboin . ref name Audoin Martindale 1992, s.v. Audoin , pp. 152 &ndash 153 ref When the marriage took place is unclear. the contemporary Procopius speaks of a marriage arrangement between Audoin and an unnamed sister of Amalafrid , a prince of mixed royal Ostrogoths Ostrogothic and Thuringii Thuringian stock. The bethrothment had been organized by the Byzantine Empire Byzantine Emperor Justinian I Justinian at a date spanning from c.540 to 552, and this unnamed female may be the Rodelinda named by Paul the Deacon but it has been objected to by the Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire that it is not certain that the marriage Procopius speaks of eventually took place. A major difficulty added to this is that in 552 Alboin was already a warrior. The PLRE believes the marriage between Audoin and Rodelinda took place in the 530s. ref name Audoin ref Amory 2003, p. 462 ref Other scholars instead tend to accept the identification, observing its importance in linking the Lombard kings with the bloodline of the Amali , the royal house of the Ostrogoths. Such a marriage would have made Audoin a legitimate heir to both the Ostrogothic and Thuringian thrones, the latter in particular as Audoin was already half brother of the last king of the Thuringians, thus putting him in opposition to the Franks who had taken over most of the Thuringian lands. ref Schutz 2001, p. 79 ref ref Curta 2001, p. 191 ref Another explanation of Rodelinda s origins is given by Istv n Bon according to him she was probably a Bavaria n princess, to be considered distinct from the ...   more details

Though Origo Gothica , maintaining Theodoric as nucleus of the Goth tradition, denies the hostile Theodoric membership among the Amali, modern scholars, such as Wolfram 1990 32, 247f , confirm a relationship between the two. ref Around 459, he is attested as in friendly relationship with the Byzantine Empire , possibly one of the foederati , and receiving an annual subsidy by the Byzantines. ref name martindale Martindale. ref Under Leo I In 471, the Alan Aspar, at the time magister militum of Emperor Leo I, was murdered by order of the emperor himself. Strabo, who was at the command of his people in Thrace, revolted to avenge his relative, but was defeated by the Byzantine generals Zeno and Basiliscus, who were both later emperors.
