  1. Decay energy

Nuclear physics The decay energy is the energy released by a radioactive decay . Radioactive decay is the process in which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by emitting ionizing particles and radiation . This decay, or loss of energy, results in an atom of one type, called the parent nuclide transforming to an atom of a different type, called the daughter nuclide. Decay calculation The energy difference of the reactant s is often written as Q math Q text Kinetic energy text after text Kinetic energy text before , math math Q text Rest mass text after times c 2 text Rest mass text before times c 2 , math Decay energy is usually quoted in terms of the energy units MeV mega electronvolt s or KeV thousand electronvolts . Types of radioactive decay include gamma ray beta decay decay energy is divided between the emitted electron and the neutrino which is emitted at the same time alpha decay The decay energy is the mass difference dm between the parent and the daughter atom and particles. It is equal to the energy of radiation E . If A is the Radioactive decay Radioactive decay rates radioactive activity , i.e. the number of transforming atoms per time, M the molar mass, then the radiation power W is math W dm times left frac A M right , math or math W E times left frac A M right , math Example Cobalt 60 decays into Ni60. 1. Optical decay

Orphan date February 2009 Optical decay is process of relaxation of excitation of an excited quantum system, usually due to the spontaneous emission of a photon or a phonon . Optical decay is dominant mechanism of quenching of excitation of active optical media. In solid state laser s the optical decay limits the storage of energy in active medium. Also, the term optical decay is used to the effect of quick reduction of luminosity of astrophysical objects ref name a http edoc.mpg.de 199219 DOI 10.1051 0004 6361.20034409 ref Phenomenology of optical decay In the first approximation, the optical decay can be treated as just spontaneous emission , and its rate is determined with the Einstein Coefficients . For the most of laser systems, the effects of decoherence determine the spectral width of the emitted photons, and there is no reason to consider in detail the evolution of isolated quantum mechanical systems which show the optical decay. Shape of specral line at the optical decay of an idealized atom The isolated quantum system atom, ion, molecule or even a quantum dot may have metastable states, weakly coupled to the outer world. Some couliknd should be taken into account otherwize, there is no optical decay. 1. Distance decay

Distance decay is a Human geography geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or spatial interactions. The distance decay effect states that the interaction between two locales declines as the distance between them increases. Once the distance is outside of the two locales activity space, their interactions begin to decrease. With the advent of faster travel, distance has less effect than it did in the past, except where places previously well connected by railroads, for example, have fallen off the beaten path. Advances in communications technology, such as phones, radio and television broadcasts, and internet, have further decreased the effects of distance. Related terms include friction of distance, which describes the force that creates distance decay and Waldo R. Tobler s First law of geography , an informal statement that All things are related, but near things are more related than far things. Distance decay is graphically represented by a curving line that swoops concavely downward as distance along the x axis increases. Distance decay can be mathematically represented by the expression I 1 d , where I is interaction and d is distance, among other forms. It also weighs into the decision to migrate, leading many migrants to move less far than they originally contemplated. Distance decay is also evident in town city centres. It can refer to br the number of pedestrians getting further from the centre of the Central Business District CBD , br the street quality decreasing as distance from the centre increases, br the quality of shops decreasing as distance from the centre increases br the height of buildings decreasing as distance from the centre increases br the price of land decreasing as distance from the centre increases br See also Loss of Strength Gradient The Death of Distance References Working Group on Distance Decay , Kristin Taverna, Weimin Xi, http www.bio.unc.edu faculty peet lab ecoinfo distance decay distance decay.htm Fellman ...   more details

  1. Orbital decay

Orbital decay is the process of prolonged reduction in the altitude of a satellite satellite s orbit . This can be due to drag produced by an Celestial body atmosphere atmosphere due to frequent collisions between the satellite and surrounding air molecules. The drag experienced by the object is larger in the case of increased solar activity, because it heats and expands the upper atmosphere. For larger bodies, tide tidal effects can cause orbital decay, and for even larger ones Gravitational wave gravitational radiation can have an effect. Citation needed date October 2010 By atmospheric drag A major cause of orbital decay for satellites in low Earth orbit is the drag of Earth s atmosphere. During sunspots solar maxima the Earth s atmosphere causes significant drag up to a hundred kilometers higher than during solar minima . Citation needed date January 2010 Atmospheric drag resulting in satellite re entry can be described by the following sequence Citation needed date January 2010 lower altitude increased orbital speed denser atmosphere increased drag increased heat usually burns on re entry Orbital decay thus involves a positive feedback effect, where the more the orbit decays, the lower its altitude drops, and the lower the altitude, the faster the decay. Orphan date January 2011 Elegant Decay is the distinct cultural historical concept that some places, and structures, become gradually more elegant, notable or beautiful as they decay, or fall into ruin, due to their historical, architectural and or cultural significance.
