The Bornholm school of painters started to take shape towards the beginning of the 20th century on the Danish island of Bornholm when a number of artists developed a distinctive style of classic modernism, inspired by the island s unique landscapes and light. Karl Isaksson and Edvard Weie were among the first to paint the island s constantly changing natural beauty, using pure, subdued colour to produce work in new aesthetic directions. They were soon joined by other Danish artists including Niels Lergaard , Kr sten Iversen and Oluf H st . They lived mainly in the picturesque little ports of Gudhjem and Svaneke on the northern coast, adventuring at times over to the small island of Christians where they found further seclusion and inspiration. ref http www.roughguides.com website travel destination content default.aspx?titleid 101&xid idbox head39066592 0187 The Bornholm School from the Rough Guide to Denmark. Bognemark, the little farmhouse near Gudhjem was one of H st s favourite motifs. From 1935 on, he painted the farm some 200 times under varying conditions at different times of year, often in accordance with the particular mood he happened to be in. ref http www.bornholms kunstmuseum.dk Default.asp?m 138 Oluf H st from Bornholms Kunstmuseum in Danish . He also studied under Harald Giersing where he was introduced to expressionism . C zanne became his greatest inspiration although H st explained how his work was influenced distinctively by the Nordic tradition. With the changing seasons and weather, his work differed considerably from that of C sanne. After H st had returned to Bornholm, he concentrated on local buildings and landscapes including views of Gudhjem, the smokehouse s, and of course, the Bognemark farm. He also painted many sunsets as seen from the farmhouse looking out across the water towards the Swedish coast. Niels Lergaard 1893 1982 was a Danish painter. After training as a house painter, he spent a few years in Norway , where he became interested in Norwegian landscape painting. On returning to Denmark he studied and later taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts , Copenhagen 1917 20 . ref http www.invaluable.com artist lergaard niels 3kz3jk1ibs bio Niels Lergaard biography from Invaluable.com . Retrieved 11 December 2008. ref In the late 1920s, he moved to the picturesque Danish island of Bornholm where his paintings displayed the careful construction that characterized his work, for example in his landscapes of Gudhjem . He painted the sea, with a high horizon, the coast, figures with precisely constructed silhouettes, or Bornholm s steep cliffs. The dark colours he used in the 1930s were gradually replaced by a lighter palette. He worked to release new expressive possibilities from oil colours and in this way further emphasized the luminous power and depth of the picture plane. Thus his landscapes display a deeply symbolic, transcendent power. See also Art of Denmark Bornholm school of painters References Reflist Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata .
