It is named after the second Australian Prime Minister , AlfredDeakin . History Two separate schools in the area, Deakin High School in Deakin and Woden Valley High School in Mawson, Australian Capital Territory Mawson , commenced in 1966 and 1968 respectively. In 1989, the two were amalgamated on the Deakin site and the name AlfredDeakin High School chosen. Since 1989 the school building has undergone considerable refurbishment, including the acquisition of modern kitchens, technology, including information technology and photography areas. During 1991 the school gymnasium was completed and officially opened. In more recent times special purpose rooms for dance and drama, computing, multi media and problem solving in mathematics have been added. In early 1999 major refurbishments were completed in the science area and similar improvements to teaching spaces in Technology were completed in 2000. Deakin was born in Sutton Coldfield , Warwickshire in 1890 but began his working life in a South Wales steel plant. He became an active trade unionist during the First World War and a full time official in 1919. In 1932, he became national secretary of the General Workers National Trade Group within the TGWU and in 1935 became assistant general secretary. In 1940 he effectively took over the position of general secretary, following the appointment of Ernest Bevin as a cabinet minister. Deakin s period as general secretary was marked by a consolidation of the powers of executive, occasional serious outbreaks of unofficial strike action among union members and a fierce anti communist line. He died in office in 1955 and was succeeded by Jock Tiffin . He was the captain of Aston Villa F.C. Aston Villa and also played for Walsall F.C. Walsall . Career Deakin signed for the club as a 15 year old. He became a regular in the side during the 1960 61 season and collected a League Cup winners tankard at the start of the following season. He broke his ankle during the 1964 65 season, but recovered to skipper the side for the 1966 67 season. Deakin left Villa Park stadium Villa Park for Walsall in 1969, having made 231 league appearances for the club sand scored 9 goals. Michael Deakin born 5 May 1957 is a former England English cricket er who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club Derbyshire in 1981. Deakin was born at Bury , Lancashire . In 1979 he was playing cricket for Combined Services cricket team Combined Services and for the Royal Air Force cricket team RAF . He joined Derbyshire for the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1981 1981 season as a stopgap solution to a Derbyshire wicket keeper shortage, while Bob Taylor cricketer Bob Taylor was engaged in Test matches. He played in the Second XI in May 1981, and in under 25 competitions in June. In July, he made four first class appearances for the team and played in the John Player League. He was released by the club at the end of the season. Deakin was a right handed batsman and played six innings in four first class matches with an average of 7.5 and a top score of 15. He did not bat in the one day competition.
