Sheikh AlHajj Salim Suwari was a late 15th century West African Soninke people Soninke karamogo Islamic scholar who focused on the responsibilities of Muslims minorities residing in a non Muslim society. He formulated an important theological rationale for peaceful coexistence with the non Muslim ruling classes called the Suwarian tradition, which survives to this day despite the pressures of modernism. Background The spread of Islam throughout West Africa was a concomitant of long distance trade by Mande languages Mande speaking Muslim traders and craftsmen known as Dyula . Since Muslims in these regions lived in the dar al harb land of the unbelievers , they needed legitimization for trading with unbelievers an activity viewed with disdain by some North African Muslim jurists. Sheikh AlHajj Salim Suwari focused on providing a solution to this and other related issues. Image Qaser el haj.jpg 300px thumb Gasr Al H jj Gasr Al H jj Arabic is a huge fortified granary of circular shape built in the 7th century AH 13th century AD by Abdallah Abu Jatla Arabic . It is located in Libya on the Tripoli Aziziya Al Jawf route in Libya about 130  km from Tripoli . It was built to serve as granary for families from the surrounding area in return for quarter of their crops, which, it is said, the owner had endowed as a waqf for teaching Qur an and Islamic related subjects to the people of the area. The building originally comprised 114 chambers, which could be the number of the subscribing families during the time of construction. It is also speculated that the number 114 was used symbolically to reflect the number of Sura in the Qur an, a view widely accepted by villagers in the region nowadays. The number of chambers as of now, is 119, as result of splitting 10 chambers due to inheritance disputes. Other changes include the addition of 29 cellars. Fiqh The This is a sub article of Ihram . Mut ah of Hajj or hajjal tamattu joy of Hajj , involves relaxation of the ihram between the Umrah and Hajj , including the dress code and other prohibitions. History When planning a pilgrimage, one is expected to announce his intention to do so at the start of the journey. If one would start a pilgrimage with only the intention of doing a minor one, and after starting it he would decide that he also intends to do the major one, he needs to go a certain distance away from Mecca , and then start a new pilgrimage, intending to do the greater one. Muhammad had decreed that Umrah and Hajj can be combined, ie starting a pilgrimage with the intention of participating in both events. However, Umar decided to ban this practice during his era as Sunni Caliph during a Hadith of Umar s speech of forbidding Mut ah public announcement in which he forbade Mut ah . This led to complaints from some of the citizens, as described in the hadith of the four advices to Umar . The prohibition of this practice has since been voided, and the combination of both Umrah and Hajj in the same month is permitted by both Shi a and Sunnis. Overview There exists two form of pilgrimage, the minor pilgrimage Arabic Umrah and the major pilgrimage Arabic Hajj . The major one contains more rules, and is obligatory upon all Muslims if they can afford it financially, but if they can not afford it financially it is not obligatory to perform once per life. While doing a pilgrimage ... it was permissible to leave the state of Ihram if one intended to attend Hajj. and this relaxation became known as joy Arabic Mut ah or more distinctly, the joy of pilgrimage , Mut ah of Hajj or in Arabic Hajjal Tamattu . Cleanup date August 2008 Mirza Mohammad Ali 1836 1925 , better known as Hajj Sayyah meaning the traveler , was a famous Iranian world traveler and political activist. Biography Hajj Sayyah was born in 1836 in the town of Mahallat in Iran . His studies exposed him at a young age to modern and democratic ideas that were at the time spreading throughout parts of the world. The stark difference he observed between the treatment suffered by most Iranians under their autocratic rulers and the ideas he studied inspired him to see the rest of the world. At the age of 23, Hajj Sayyah embarked on a remarkable journey around the globe that would last for nearly 18 years. He began his travels by wandering throughout Central Asia and Europe for more than six years. Often he traveled alone and in poverty. The motivation for Hajj Sayyah s travels was his thirst for knowledge and spiritual strength. He wanted to learn as much as he could about the world and how other people lived, in order to bring those ideas back to Iran. As a result of his observations throughout his travels, he concluded that human beings are supposed to live in reasonably humane societies and enjoy basic human rights. Hajj Sayyah came to the United States through New York . During his ten year stay in the U.S., he met with many prominent personalities such as President Ulysses Grant on more than one occasion. His travels across the United States eventually took him to San Francisco where he spent several months. File .jpg thumb right Haji Mirza Aqasi Hajj Mirza Aghasi or Aqasi , sometimes known as Haji Mollah Abbas Iravani , was Sadr e Aazam equivalent to Prime Minister of Mohammad Shah Qajar of Iran during 1835 1848 . Mirza Aghasi initiated Mohammad Shah into Sufi mysticism, and the two men came to be known as two dervishes . ref Avery, Modern Iran , p. 30. ref While he has often been criticized for contributing to the disasters of the reign, it is possible that he was attempting to use Sufism as a weapon against the growing hold of the official representatives of religion, the mullah s, who were opposing both modernization and foreign influence. In foreign affairs, he managed to prevent Iran disintegrating either into autonomous principalities or appanages of Russia in Asia and United Kingdom Britain in India , and internally he revived the cultivation of the mulberry tree in the Kirman region, to feed silkworms and he envisaged the diversion of the waters of the Karaj River River Karaj for Tehran s water supply. ref Avery, Modern Iran , pp. 46 7. ref The failure of Haj Mirza Aghasi s countrymen to praise him for his enterprise was partly no doubt due to an equally shrewd appreciation on their part that new economic alignments emerging during his period as Prime Minister were not destined to enrich the people, but only to make a rapacious aristocracy more powerful, while the situation of the cultivator became little better than slavery. ref Avery, Modern Iran , p. 47. ref References references Sources Peter Avery, Modern Iran , Praeger, 1965.
