  1. Pasteur effect

Refimprove date November 2009 The Pasteur effect is an inhibiting effect of oxygen on the Fermentation biochemistry fermentation process. Discovery The effect was discovered in 1857 by Louis Pasteur , who showed that aerating yeasted broth causes yeast cell growth to increase, while conversely, Fermentation biochemistry fermentation rate decreases. Explanation The effect can be easily explained, as the yeast being facultative anaerobes can produce energy using two different metabolic pathways. While the oxygen concentration is low, the product of glycolysis , pyruvate , is turned into ethanol and carbon dioxide , and the energy production efficiency is low 2 Mole unit moles of Adenosine triphosphate ATP per mole of glucose . If the oxygen concentration grows, pyruvate is converted to acetyl CoA that can be used in the citric acid cycle , which increases the efficiency to 38 moles of ATP per mole of glucose. Under anaerobic conditions, the rate of glucose metabolism is faster, but the amount of ATP produced as already mentioned is smaller. When exposed to aerobic conditions, the ATP production increases and the rate of glycolysis slows, because the ATP produced acts as an allosteric inhibition allosteric inhibitor for phosphofructokinase 1 , the third enzyme in the glycolysis pathway. So, from the standpoint of ATP production, it is advantageous for yeast to undergo Krebs Cycle in the presence of oxygen, as more ATP is produced from less glucose. Practical implications All the processes used in alcohol production are kept in anaerobic conditions, while breeding yeast for biomass is done in aerobic conditions, the broth being aeration aerated . 1. Aeration

see also Water aeration Aeration also called aerification is the Systems engineering process process by which air is circulated through, mixed with or solvation dissolved in a liquid or substance. Aeration of liquids File Fine Bubble Diffuser Tube .jpg thumb Aerating water by means of fine pore membrane diffuser Methods Aeration of liquids usually water is achieved by passing the liquid through air by means of fountain s, Waterfall cascades , paddle wheels or cones. passing air through the liquid by means of the Venturi tube , Aeration Turbine aeration turbines or compressed air which can be combined with diffuser s air stone s , as well as fine bubble diffusers , coarse bubble diffusers or linear aeration tubing. Ceramics are suitable for this purpose, often involving dispersion of fine air or gas bubbles through the porous ceramic into a liquid. The smaller the bubbles, the more gas is exposed to the liquid increasing the gas transfer efficiency. Diffusers or sparger s can also be designed into the system to cause turbulence or mixing if desired. Porous ceramic diffusers are made by fusing aluminum oxide grains using porcelain bonds to form a strong, uniformly porous and homogeneous structure. The naturally hydrophilic material is easily wetted resulting in the production of fine, uniform bubbles. ref http www.refractron.com diffusion sparging aeration.asp Porous Ceramic Diffusers ref On a given volume of air or liquid, the surface area changes proportionally with drop or bubble size, the very surface area where exchange can occur. Utilizing extremely small bubbles or drops increases the rate of gas transfer aeration due to the higher contact surface area. 1. Magic sand

Magic sand , Moon Sand , Mars Sand , Space Sand , Sqand or Aqua Sand is a toy made from sand coated with a Hydrophobe hydrophobic compound. The presence of this hydrophobic compound causes the grains of sand to adhere to one another and form cylinder geometry cylinder s to minimize surface area when exposed to water. As soon as the sand is taken out of water, it is completely dry and flows freely. These properties are achieved by covering ordinary beach sand, which contains tiny particles of pure silica , and exposing them to vapors of trimethylsilanol Methyl CH sub 3 sup sub 3 sub Silicon Si Hydroxyl OH , an organosilicon compound. Upon exposure, the trimethylsilane compound bonds to the silica particles while forming water. The exteriors of the sand grains are thus coated with Hydrophobe hydrophobic groups. Magic sand was originally developed to trap ocean oil spill s near the shore. This would be done by sprinkling Magic sand on floating petroleum, which would then mix with the oil and make it heavy enough to sink. However, due to the expense of production, it is not being used for this purpose. It has also been tested by utility companies in the Arctic areas as a foundation for junction boxes, as it never freezes. It can be also used as an aerating medium for potted plants. Magic sand is made in blue, green, or red in colors but appears silvery in water because of a layer of air that forms around the sand. Earliest reference to waterproof sand can be found in a 1915 book called The Boy Mechanic Book 2 put out by Popular Mechanics. The Boy Mechanic states waterproof sand was invented by East Indian magicians. The sand was made by mixing heated sand with melted wax. The wax would repel the water when the sand was exposed to water. ref cite author G. Lee, Leonard Publisher title The Boy Mechanic Book 2, 1000 Things For A Boy To Do. Image Molehill trail.JPG thumb 180px Trail of molehill at Kasori Midden Shell middens shell midden , Chiba, Chiba Chiba city, Japan 2008 October, 13 A molehill or mole hill , mole mound is a conical mound of loose soil raised by small burrow ing mammal s, including mole animal mole s, but also similar animals such as mole rat s, marsupial mole s and vole s. They are often the only sign to indicate the presence of the animal. Molehills are waste material from digging or repairing burrows, and so are usually found where the animal is establishing new burrows, or where existing ones are damaged for example by the weight of grazing livestock . Where moles burrow beneath the roots of tree s or shrub s, the roots support the tunnel, and molehills are less common, and so even a dense population of the animals may be inconspicuous in these places. Molehills commonly occur in lines along the route of the burrow, but in some cases they may not be directly above the burrow itself but at the ends of short side tunnels. The mole runs vary in depth from surface runs only a few inches deep, to main runs, some 12 to 18 inches deep ref http www.pest management.co.uk Moles.htm. ref Molehills are sometimes used as a source of fine soil for use in gardening . 1. Bubble bath

refimprove date June 2008 File Bundesarchiv Bild 102 09247, Berlinerin im Schaumbad.jpg right thumb A woman in a bubble bath Berlin , February 1930 . The term bubble bath can be used to describe aeration aerated or carbonated baths, or to describe bathing with a layer of surfactant foam on the surface of the water and consequently also the surfactant product used to produce the foam. Aerated and carbonated baths & 150 bubbles in water Bubbles in the water can be produced either by aerating it mechanically in some cases using jets that also move the water using equipment installed permanently or temporarily in a bathtub, hot tub , or pool, or by producing gas in the water in a bathtub through the use of effervescent solids. The latter can come as small pellets known as bath fizzies or as a bolus known as a bath bomb , and they produce carbon dioxide by reaction of a bicarbonate or carbonate with an organic acid. Bath fizzies are infeasible as liquids because of the inability to keep the mixture from reacting prematurely. This is a distinction from foam bath see below preparations, which may be supplied as liquids or solids. When the term bubble bath is encountered on the Internet referring to a gas infused bath or pool, it is more often by a non native user of English who may not be aware of its use to refer to foam baths see below . In other languages the distinction is more likely to be kept by use of different words. Foam baths & 150 bubbles on top of water Image Three ducks in the tub.jpg 180px thumb Three rubber ducks in foam bath Bubbles on top of the water, less ambiguously known as a foam bath see photo , can be obtained by adding a product containing foaming surfactants to water and temporarily aerating it by agitation often merely by the fall of water from a faucet . 1. Sequencing batch reactor

Refimprove date February 2007 Sequencing batch reactors SBR or sequential batch reactors are industrial processing tanks for the treatment of wastewater . SBR reactors treat waste water such as sewage or output from anaerobic digester s or mechanical biological treatment facilities in batches. Oxygen is bubbled through the waste water to reduce biochemical oxygen demand BOD and chemical oxygen demand COD to make suitable for discharge into sewers or for use on land. While there are several configurations of SBRs the basic process is similar. The installation consists of at least two identically equipped tanks with a common inlet, which can be switched between them. The tanks have a flow through system, with raw wastewater influent coming in at one end and treated water effluent flowing out the other. While one tank is in settle decant mode the other is aeration aerating and filling. At the inlet is a section of the tank known as the bio selector. This consists of a series of walls or baffles which direct the flow either from side to side of the tank or under and over consecutive baffles. This helps to mix the incoming Influent and the returned activated sludge , beginning the biological digestion process before the liquor enters the main part of the tank. Treatment Stages There are five stages to treatment p 1. Fill p 2. React p 3. Settle p 4. Decant p 5. Idle p Aeration of the mixed liquor is performed during the first two stages by the use of fixed or floating mechanical pumps or by transferring air into fine bubble diffusers fixed to the floor of the tank. During this period the inlet valve to the tank is open and a returned activated sludge pump takes mixed liquid and solids mixed liquor from the outlet end of the tank to the inlet. This seeds the incoming sewage with live bacteria. Removal of Constituents Aeration times vary according to the plant size and the composition quantity of the incoming liquor, but are typically 60 90 minutes.
