Adminius fled to continental Europe with a small group of followers and surrendered to the Romans. The Roman emperor emperor at the time, Caligula , presented this relatively minor event as a great victory over the foreign tribes of Britain and even penned an extravagant report which he insisted be read to the Roman senate. Togodumnus d. AD 43 was a historical king of the British Catuvellauni tribe at the time of the Roman conquest of Britain Roman conquest . He can probably be identified with the legendary British king Guiderius . He is usually thought to have led the fight against the Romans alongside his brother, but to have been killed early in the campaign. However, some authorities now argue that he sided with the Romans and is one and the same person as the client king Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus , whose original name may have been Togidubnus or Togodumnus. It was founded at an unknown date in the 5th century by Jutes , members of a Germanic people from continental Europe, some of whom settled in Britain after the withdrawal of the Roman Britain Romans . It was one of the seven traditional kingdoms of the so called heptarchy Anglo Saxon heptarchy , but it lost its independence in the 8th century, when it became a sub kingdom of Mercia . In the 9th century, it became a sub kingdom of Wessex , and in the 10th century, it became part of the unified Kingdom of England which was created under the leadership of Wessex. Prehistoric Kent Kent has been occupied since the Lower Palaeolithic as finds from the quarries at Swanscombe attest. During the Neolithic the Medway megaliths were built and there is a rich sequence of Bronze Age occupation indicated by finds and features such as the Ringlemere gold cup . Iron Age Kent The name Kent probably means rim or border compare the dictionary words cant in English, Kant in German, etc , regarding the eastern part of the modern county as a border land or coastal district. Historical linguists believe that the proto Indo European root kanthos could not pass into a Germanic language with its initial K sound intact, so the word must have passed via an intermediate language, either Celtic or Latin. Julius Caesar described it as Cantium, although he did not record the inhabitants name for themselves, in 51 BC. His writings suggest localised groups of people whose chieftains were flattered by his description of them as kings . Writing of the Britons generally in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico Caesar noted that ...by far the most civilised are those who inhabit Cantium, the whole of which is a maritime region and their manners differ little from those of the Gauls .
