  1. Active site

In molecular biology the active site is part of an enzyme where Enzyme substrate substrates bind and undergo a chemical reaction . The majority of enzymes are proteins but RNA enzymes called ribozymes also exist. The active site of an enzyme is usually found in a cleft or pocket that is lined by amino acid residues or nucleotides in ribozymes that participate in recognition of the substrate. Residues that directly participate in the catalytic reaction mechanism are called active site residues. Image Induced fit diagram.svg right thumb 350px Induced fit hypothesis of enzyme action. Binding mechanism There are two proposed models of how enzymes work the Enzyme .22Lock and key.22 model lock and key model and the Enzyme catalysis Induced fit induced fit model. The lock and key model assumes that the active site is a perfect fit for a specific substrate and that once the substrate binds to the enzyme no further modification is necessary this is simplistic. The induced fit model is a development of the lock and key model and instead assumes that an active site is more flexible and that the presence of certain residues amino acids in the active site will encourage the enzyme to locate the correct ... Residues of the active site will act as donors or acceptors of protons or other groups on the substrate to facilitate the reaction. onesource date March 2009 Image GTC Active Optics Acutators.jpg thumb right Actuators of the active optics of the Gran Telescopio Canarias . Active optics is a technology for reflecting telescope s developed in the 1980s, which has more recently enabled the construction of a generation of telescopes with 8 metre primary mirrors. Active optics works by actively adjusting the telescope s mirror s. This method is used by, among others, the Nordic Optical Telescope , the New Technology Telescope , the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Keck telescope s, as well as all of the largest telescopes built in the last decade. Most modern telescopes are reflectors, with the Primary mirror primary element being a very large mirror . Historically, the mirrors had to be very thick to hold its shape to the required accuracy as the telescope travelled across the sky. This limited their maximum diameter to 5 or 6 metre s 200 or 230 inch es , such as in the Palomar Observatory s Hale telescope .
