The Wizard of A.I.D.S. Aware Individuals Deserving Survival is a short Musical theatre musical play created by the AIDS Educational Theatre now HealthWorks Theatre in Chicago in 1987. The play, which parodies the 1939 in film 1939 film The Wizard of Oz 1939 film The Wizard of Oz , is an AIDS education piece that follows Dorothy Gale and her friends from the Land of AIDS as they battle the Wicked Witch of Unsafe Sex and learn how to prevent the spread of HIV. Along the way, the Scarecrow Oz Scarecrow learns to use his brain to make good choices to avoid infection, the Tin Woodman Tin Man finds it in his heart to feel compassion for people with the disease and the Cowardly Lion realizes the courage to face his fears about becoming ill. In 1990, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power ACT UP chapter in San Francisco split into two chapters, the San Francisco chapter and the Golden Gate chapter. The catalyst for this was over decision making processes, although it also involved many larger issues. According to ACT UP Golden Gate, ACT UP Golden Gate concentrated on issues involving treatment and treatment access while ACT UP San Francisco focused on broader social issues involving public policy and politics. Over the next several years the two ACT UP chapters worked separately and together on local and national AIDS issues. But in 1994, the two organizations stopped working together, and they grew further apart. The book has been published in collaboration with Avahan, the India Aids initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation . Proceeds from the book go toward educational opportunities for AIDS orphans in India. The book features a foreword by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, an introduction by Bill Gates Bill and Melinda Gates and essays by 16 contributing writers including Salman Rushdie , Kiran Desai , Vikram Seth , Siddhartha Deb , William Dalrymple historian William Dalrymple , Amit Chaudhuri , Sunil Gangopadhyay , Nikita Lalwani , Sonia Faleiro , Aman Sethi , Mukul Kesavan , Jaspreet Singh , Shobhaa De , Siddharth Dhanvant Sanghvi , Nalini Jones , and CS Lakshmi each of whom spent time in the field exploring one aspect of the Indian AIDS epidemic.
