  1. A priori (languages)

This is the article about constructed languages. For other uses of the term a priori, see a priori . An a priori language is any constructed language whose vocabulary is not based on existing languages, unlike a posteriori languages a posteriori constructed languages. Examples of a priori languages include Ro language Ro , Solresol , Mirad , Klingon language Klingon , and Na vi language Na vi . By contrast, a posteriori languages are ones whose vocabulary is based on existing languages, either as a variation of one language e.g., Latino sine flexione or as a mixture of various languages. Some a priori languages are designed to be international auxiliary language s that remove what could be considered an unfair learning advantage for native speakers of a source language that would otherwise exist for a posteriori languages. Some a priori languages try to categorize their vocabulary, either to express an underlying philosophy or to make it easier to recognize new vocabulary. These are also known as philosophical language philosophical or taxonomic languages . References Alan Libert, A Priori Artificial Languages Languages of the World 24. Munich Lincom Europa, 2000 . 1. A priori probability

DISPLAYTITLE A priori probability The term a priori probability is used in distinguishing the ways in which values for probabilities can be obtained. In particular, an a priori probability is derived purely by deductive reasoning . ref Mood A.M., Graybill F.A., Boes D.C. 1974 Introduction to the Theory of Statistics 3rd Edition . McGraw Hill. Section 2.2 http www.colorado.edu Economics morey 7818 7818readings.html available online ref One way of deriving a priori probabilities is the principle of indifference , which has the character of saying that, if there are N mutually exclusive and exhaustive events and if they are equally likely, then the probability of a given event occurring is 1 N . Similarly the probability of one of a given collection of K events is K N . One disadvantage of defining probabilities in the above way is that it applies only to finite collections of events. In Bayesian inference , a priori probabilities are known as prior probability Uninformative priors uninformative priors or objective priors note that prior probability is a broader concept. 1. A priori (statistics)

italic title Unreferenced date December 2009 In statistics , a priori knowledge is prior knowledge about a statistical population population , rather than that estimated by recent observation. It is common in Bayesian inference to make inferences conditional probability conditional upon this knowledge, and the integration of a priori knowledge is the central difference between the Bayesian and Frequency probability Frequentist approach to statistics. We need not be 100 certain about something before it can be considered a priori knowledge, but conducting estimation conditional upon assumptions for which there is little evidence should be avoided. A priori knowledge often consists of knowledge of the Domain mathematics domain of a parameter for example, that it is positive that can be incorporated to improve an estimate. Within this domain the distribution is usually assumed to be uniform distribution uniform in order to take advantage of certain theoretical results most importantly the central limit theorem . Examples Basic example Suppose we pick without replacement two red beads and three black beads from a bag containing only black and red beads what is the probability the next bead we pick out will be red? Without a priori knowledge of the bag s contents, we cannot answer the question. But if, a priori , we already know there were only two red beads in the bag, we could be certain the probability of picking a red bead is zero, the corollary being 100 certainty of a black bead being picked, but only if we know that there were more than three black beads in the bag to begin with. . It is a commonly used statistical method to make, or fit, a priori data to support a Statistical model model , or conversely, to modify the model to accommodate a priori data. 1. A priori estimate

In the theory of partial differential equation s, an a priori estimate also called an apriori estimate or a priori bound is an estimate for the size of a solution or its derivatives of a partial differential equation. A priori is Latin for from before and refers to the fact that the estimate for the solution is derived before the solution is known to exist. One reason for their importance is that if one can prove an a priori estimate for solutions of a differential equation, then it is often possible to prove that solutions exist using the continuity method or a fixed point theorem . A priori estimates were introduced and named by harvs txt authorlink Sergei Natanovich Bernstein first Sergei Natanovich last Bernstein year 1906 year2 1910 , who used them to prove existence of solutions to second order nonlinear elliptic equations in the plane. Some other early influential examples of a priori estimates include the Schauder estimates given by harvs txt last Schauder year1 1934 year2 1937 , and the estimates given by by De Giorgi and Nash for second order elliptic or parabolic equations in many variables in their solution to Hilbert s nineteenth problem . 1. Intelligibility (philosophy)

Other uses Intelligibility disambiguation Intelligibility In philosophy, intelligibility is what can be comprehended by the human mind . The intelligible method is thought thinking itself, or the human mind reflecting. Plato referred to the intelligible realm of mathematics , Intelligible form forms , first principles , logical Deductive reasoning deduction , and the dialectical method . The intelligible realm of thought thinking about thought does not necessarily require any visual images, sensual impressions, and material causes for the contents of mind. Descartes referred to this method of thought thinking about itself, without the possible illusions of the senses. Kant made similar claims about A priori and a posteriori a priori knowledge. A priori knowledge is claimed to be independent of the content of experience. Usage The object philosophy objects or concepts that have intelligibility may be called intelligible . There may be a distinction between everything that is intelligible and everything that is visible, called the intelligible world and the visible world in e.g. the analogy of the divided line . An a posteriori language from Latin language Latin a posteriori from the later , according to Louis Couturat , is any constructed language whose elements are borrowed or based on existing languages, as opposed to the A priori languages a priori languages . The a posteriori languages can be divided into three categories Simplified ethnic languages, like Basic English or Latino sine flexione Naturalistic languages, i.e. closest to the real ethnic languages most often Latin or Romance languages , like Occidental language or Interlingua Autonomous schematic languages, in which grammar is a priori but vocabulary is a posteriori , like Esperanto or, to some extent, Volap k . 1. Adaptive representation

Adaptive representation is an extension by Francis Heylighen ref Heylighen, Francis 1990 . Representation and Change A Metarepresentational Framework for the Foundations of Physical and Cognitive Science . Communication and Cognition, Ghent, Belgium. ref to Kant s epistemology theory of knowledge . According to Kant, perception passes by the filters of the mind who observes the phenomena. In this line, there exists in the human mind invariant and a priori principles of experience. As an example, one may have imprinted in the brain a Dualism philosophy of mind Cartesian representation of space, a notion of time, color separation and others. This may be called static representation . Heylighen has proposed a revision of these Kantian ideas, in which these principles are not supposed to be invariant and necessary A priori and a posteriori philosophy a priori instead alternative principles exist for the organization of experience in adaptive representations. 1. Jumping after Wirkola

Jumping after Wirkola , idiom of Norway Norwegian origin hoppe etter Wirkola , signifying the prospect of and the difficulties associated with embarking on a task where one s immediate predecessor has accomplished an unusually good job. The difficulties alluded to may be both practical and psychological in nature, and are sometimes related to the aspect of the situation that no one really cares how you are doing, as the surroundings might have spent all their attention forces and enthusiasm admiring and applauding your predecessor. The etymology of this eponymous idiom relates to the Norway Norwegian ski jumper Bj rn Wirkola . Since Wirkola would be the a priori and a posteriori philosophy a priori and a priori and a posteriori philosophy a posteriori star of any event he participated in, spectator attention and excitement levels were building up in the minutes leading up to any of his ski jumps, with appropriate crescendo and dynamics music forte fortissimo culmination during his flying through the air inadvertently causing the next participant, regardless of fame, nationality or ability, to jump in and into the vacuum of tired spectator silence. 1. Preformation theory

The Preformation theory states that knowledge is possible only because God has endowed humans with certain innate ideas along with dispositions or aptitudes in certain ways. This was recognized by Immanuel Kant as an alternative to his theory regarding the categories of understanding and their source. Overview According to Kant s view the aptitudes are both innate and a priori and a posteriori philosophy a priori not given by a creator. Contrary to Kant s position, the preformation theory avoids skepticism about the nature of the noumenal world Kant believed that the real world is unknowable . It does so by claiming that the rational structures of the human mind are similar to the rational order of the real world because both are created by God to work together, and this similarity makes the attaining of accurate knowledge about the real world possible.
