The first ruler was Jalaf Ibn Rashid 802 , who settled with his clan in the village they named Midayar, modern Barbastro. Al Muntasir lang ar died 862 was the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad from 861 to 862. His pious title means He that Triumphs in the Lord . Muhammad ibn Jarir al Tabari records that in A.H. 236 850 851 al Muntasir led the pilgrimage. The previous year al Mutawakkil had named his three son s heirs and seeming to favour al Muntasir. However, this appeared to change and al Muntasir feared his father was going to move against him. So, it seems he struck first. Al Mutawakkil was killed by a Turkish soldier on December 11, 861. Al Muntasir succeeded smoothly to the throne of the Caliphate on that same day in December 861 with the support of the Turkish faction after the murder of his father by a Turkish soldier. Al Muntasir was implicated in the crime. The Turkish party then prevailed on al Muntasir to remove his brothers from the succession, fearing revenge for the murder of their father. In their place, he was to appoint his son as heir apparent. On April 27, 862 both brothers, though al Mu tazz after a little hesitation, wrote a statement of abdication. Al Muntasir was lauded because, unlike his father, he loved the house of Al Shi a Islam Sh a and removed the ban on pilgrimage to the tombs of Hasan ibn Ali Hassan and Husayn ibn Ali Hussayn . Tahir bin Abd Allah died 862 was the Tahirid governor of Greater Khorasan Khurasan from 845 until 862. During his father Abdullah bin Tahir of Khorasan Abd Allah s lifetime, Tahir was sent into the steppes to the north in order to keep the Oghuz Turks in line he probably received Samanid assistance in this venture. When Abd Allah died in 844, the Caliph al Wathiq originally appointed another Tahirid, Ishaq b. Ibrahim b. Mus ab, as his successor in Khurasan, but then reversed this decision and confirmed Tahir as governor. Little is known about Tahir s reign, although there was unrest in some of the outlying provinces. Sistan , for example, was lost to the Tahirids when the ayyar leader Salih b. al Nadr drove out Tahir s governor and took power there himself. Tahir died in 862 his will stated that his young son Muhammad of Khorasan Muhammad should succeed him as governor, and this was honored by the caliph. Sources Bosworth, C. E.
