War service Middleton was one of 5,000 African Americans to serve in the military on the Patriot American Revolution Patriot side of the Revolutionary War, although scant evidence survives about his military service. Colonel Middleton served as commander of the Bucks of America , a Boston based unit of the Massachusetts militia . Few details have survived about the Bucks, one of only two all black Patriot units in the war. After the war, Governor John Hancock honored Colonel Middleton and his company by presenting him with a flag to commemorate their service. The flag still exists and is owned by the Massachusetts Historical Society . Miao Rebellion 1735 36 an uprising of autochthonous people from southwest China called by the Chinese Miao , but including more than the antecedent s of today s Miao people Miao national minority . The uprising was the greatest of several rebellions of 1720 30. against the Late Imperial China Chinese Empire . They were all caused by the encroachment of the Han Chinese on their territories and abuses by the imperial administration. Since the Ming dynasty southwestern China Yunnan , Guizhou , Guangxi were within the Chinese empire, but the state control of these territories was weak. Yongzheng emperor decided to strengthen it, replacing local, semi independent chieftain s, called Tusi System tusi , with regular Chinese administration.
