The first, and most widely understood definition of a public historian is a practitioner of public history . This definition holds that public historians are generally regarded as those people who create history for public consumption history as digested outside of the academy . Generally speaking, then, the difference between a historian and a public historian pertains to audience . A patient s ability to give a good history, that is to accurately recall and describe the details of relevant background, is essential in the treatment of an illness. This term has nothing to do with the subject of History per se and derives instead form the ancient Ancient Greek Greek meaning of history as narrative. distinguish Historical fallacy The historian s fallacy is a logical fallacy that occurs when one assumes that decision makers of the past viewed events from the same perspective and having the same information as those subsequently analyzing the decision. It is not to be confused with Presentism literary and historical analysis presentism , a mode of historical analysis in which present day ideas such as moral standards are projected into the past. The fallacy was outlined in 1970 by David Hackett Fischer , who suggested it was analogous to William James s psychologist s fallacy . Fischer did not suggest that historians should refrain from retrospective analysis in their work, but he reminded historians that their subjects were not able to see into the future. As an example, he cited the well known argument that Japan s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor should have been predictable in the United States because of the many indications that an attack was imminent. What this argument overlooks, says Fischer, citing the work of Roberta Wohlstetter , is that there were innumerable conflicting signs which suggested possibilities other than an attack on Pearl Harbor. Only in retrospect do the warning signs seem obvious signs which pointed in other directions tend to be forgotten. See also hindsight bias . In the field of military history , historians sometimes use what is known as the fog of war technique in hopes of avoiding the historian s fallacy. In this approach, the actions and decisions of the historical subject such as a military commander are evaluated primarily on the basis of what that person knew at the time, and not on future developments that the person could not have known. Malchus lang grc , M lkhos was a Byzantine Empire Byzantine historian. According to Suda Malchus was a Byzantine but Photios I of Constantinople Photius states that he was a native of Philadelphia and his Syria c name makes it probable that Philadelphia was the ancient Rabbah in the country of Ammonitis, east of the River Jordan . Malchus probably followed his profession of rhetor ician or sophist at Constantinople . According to Suda , he wrote a history extending from the reign of Constantine I to that of Anastasius I emperor Anastasius I but the work in seven books, of which Photius has given an account Bibl. cod. 78 , and to which he gives the title lang grc , comprehended only the period from the final sickness of the Eastern emperor Leo I emperor Leo I 473 or 474 , to the death of Julius Nepos , emperor of the West 480 . It has been supposed that this was an extract from the work mentioned by Suidas, or a mutilated copy that it was incomplete is said by Photius himself, who says that the start of the first of the seven books showed that the author had already written some previous parts, and that the close of the seventh book showed his intention of carrying it further, if his life was spared. Some scholars, among them Henri Valois Valesius ref lang la Not. in Excerpt, de Legat. ref , have thought that the history of Malchus began with Leo s sickness, and that he was the continuator of Priscus, whose history is supposed to have left off at that point. Barthold Georg Niebuhr ref lang la De Historicis ref supposed that this coincidence arose from Photius having met with a portion only of the work of Malchus, which had been inserted in some historical Catena after the work of Priscus or that the history of the previous period had been given by Malchus in another work. Agapius son of Constantine arabised as Mahb b ibn Q n n d.941 2 AD was a 10th century Arabic Christian writer, best known for his lengthy Kitab al Unwan Book of headings or History . He was the Melkite bishop of Manbij Mabbug, Hierapolis . He was contemporary with the annalist Patriarch Eutychius of Alexandria Eutychius Said al Bitriq , also a Melchite. His history commences with the foundation of the world and runs up to his own times. The portion dealing with the Arabic period is extant only in a single manuscript and breaks off in the second year of the Caliphate of Mahdi 160AH 776 7 AD . For the early history of Christianity, Agapius made use uncritically of apocryphal and legendary materials. For the following secular and ecclesiastical history, he relied on Syriac sources, in particular the World Chronicle of the Maronite Theophilus of Edessa d. 785 for the end of the Ummayad period and the beginning of the Abbasids. He made use of Eusebius s Church History Eusebius Church History only through an intermediary compilation of short extracts. This he supplements from other sources. He gives an otherwise unknown fragment of Papias and a list of Eastern Metropolitans. He uses the lost History of Bardaisan. But many of his sources must remain unknown. The History has been published with a French translation in the Patrologia Orientalis series and with a Latin translation in the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium series.
