John Gillies, M.D. 1792 1834 was a Scottish naval surgeon who later became an explorer and botanist , travelling extensively in South America . Educated at the University of Edinburgh , he served in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars . Afflicted by tuberculosis , Gillies left the UK aged 28 for South America in the hope that the climate would improve his fragile health. He spent eight years there, mostly in Argentina , surviving wars, civil unrest, and chronic ill health, sending numerous plants to William Jackson Hooker Hooker at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew before returning in 1828. Thomas Moore 1821 1887 was a garden er and botanist from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . An expert on fern s and fern allies from the British Isles , he served as Curator of the Society of Apothecaries Garden from 1848 to 1887. In 1855 he authored The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland . Under Moore s tenure during the period of so called pteridomania , the garden increased the number of fern species cultivated there by fifty percent and was renamed the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1875. The Thomas Moore Fernery was built in 1907 on the site of his original garden and now contains a display of the varieties of ferns described and cultivated by Moore and popular during the Victorian era . He began a degree course in medicine at St Andrew s University but completed his medical training at the University of Leiden in Netherlands the Netherlands in 1729 where he became interested in medicinal uses for newly discovered plants. To further study them he made an extended journey to the Caribbean , Mexico, and the Americas. He provided plant samples and specimens to other scientists in London , and published accounts of his studies in Catalogus plantarum horti regii Parisiensis . When he returned to London in 1731, the trustees for the Province of Georgia agreed to help finance another trip, having Houstoun help stock the Trustee s Garden planned for Savannah, Georgia . He journeyed to the Madeira Islands to gather grape plantings, then crossed the Atlantic Ocean Atlantic but never finished his mission, since he died in Jamaica in 1733. Thomas Thomson 4 Dec 1817 18 Apr 1878 was a Scottish surgeon with the British East India Company before becoming a botanist . He was a friend of Joseph Dalton Hooker and helped write the first volume of Flora Indica . He was born in Glasgow the son of Thomas Thomson chemist Thomas Thomson , chemistry professor at Glasgow University. He became Superintendent of the Honourable East India Company s Indian Botanical Gardens Botanic Garden at Calcutta and was the Naturalist to and Member of the Tibet Mission. He was also a Surgeon in the Bengal Army .
